An Incredibly Insight into Me!

I purchased my 23andme kit over a year ago now, and it is the gift that keeps on giving! Almost weekly, I'm given new insights into my traits, health, and family members that I never knew before. I've been able to contribute to genetic research (some of it paid!), and learn more about myself. As someone whose family didn't have any idea of our origins, it is an incredible gift to know the history of my genes.

Stagnated Release of Health Info (Not Engough)

I bought this service in 2013 and initially it looked very promising since you could see more health related information and they would release updated/new findings more often (this was more engaging for me as an end user). At some point 23andme had some issue with FDA and since then, they have been force to change their reports and only release a very reduced amount of information. I have not see anything new for a years. I was very enthusiastic about helping 23andme come up with more health findings, and I even volunteered my info to be used for research purposes but I think the efforts outweigh the benefits since none of the progress made in research translates to improvements to the reports given to the users. In other words I feel like contributing with surveys and such, doesn't make an impact on the quality/amount of reports that the end user gets. All in all, I recommend this service if you just want to have access to the raw data which later you can export and use other third party service to get more up to date reports.

Huge impact on my life

Because of 23andme (I had the original version, done in 2013, I think) I was alerted to a medical disorder and its symptoms that at that time, I didn't know existed. I had significant and multiple indicators for the possibility of having the condition. I had started having symptoms of the disorder (ankylosing spondylitis) when I was 22 years old and had multiple symptoms/episodes throughout my life (I was 59 or so when I tested) and had never been correctly diagnosed, and was misdiagnosed. I had never been referred to a rheumatologist. Due to my 23andme testing, and more research, I had my primary care provider refer me to a rheumatologist. I had given up any hope in about 1998 that I would ever find out what was wrong. To make a long story short, FINALLY, at the age of 61, I was correctly diagnosed. This was not the only reason that I recommend this service. There are many. I am an adoptee and have discovered a FIRST cousin through this service! And, lots of the medical info was extremely useful and interesting to me. (I am an RN and as an adoptee, know precious little of my biological familial history.) But the info pointing me to having AS was life-changing. Thank you 23and me!

I was adopted when I was a baby, and so all these years I thought that I was half American, and half Korean, well now I have an answer, and I also need to know my medical history, which I do not know my parents, so this is great!! Thank you.

I like 23&me but would REALLY like some small data changes : (1) please put % and centimorgans together eg: 4.5% / 231 cM (2) please put ALL matches ethnicities searchable down to smallest ethnicity because I want to find relatives from my last two ethnicities and your breakdown ignores those :( (thanks)

Who am I?

My thought was to find my ancestry and any medical conditions I was not currently aware.I have found relatives for a branch of the family (Maternal Great Grandmother) that I had no idea how I could locate. But, best of all was the knowledge I carry a marker for an issue that could occur later in life. Armed with this information I took prudent steps of sharing with my physician and important people in my life. The more curious factors in the report was how did they know my second toes are longer then my large toe, not to mention the level of Neanderthal ancestry, or my caffeine consumption? I am most impressed, if you take the initiative you too will find little details about yourself that are genetic that you may never have considered.

I bought this as the 1st of 3 DNA test that I have done. Bought it for Health and Ancestry. I passed my health reports on to my children, something that they should know about as they get older, and for their children. Other companies have better ancestry but this will get better as more and more people take this DNA test. They do update your reports regularly as more information becomes available. I recommend taking this DNA test.

I wish we could search for names and then compare DNA.
