Great guide for first time Estate Executor
on April 18, 2017
Posted by: EstateNewbie
As first time Estate Executor, this was a smooth transition from self-managed individual tax filing to 'light' assessment of Estate filing needs.
What's great about it: Read thru IRS documents, excited to learn business suite of TT offered forms needed to efile Estate returns.
What's not so great: Separate purchase from personal tax software

There is no way I know of to add explanation of item that the IRS questioned last year. This may slow down refund, and cause IRS to mail me question on this same item, and I need to answer it before refund will be released.
What's great about it: Worked Well
What's not so great: No way to add explaination to items

Inconvienence

Unlike ALL other Turbo Tax products, you cannot download all the detail of the stock transactions to the return. So you either have to do it manually, line by line or choose to enter a total amount. That is fine but IRS and the State want the detail so you have to attach your paper broker statement to back up the total numbers entered. You are missing an opportunity for streamlining the return and the process. IRS requires the detail, so you all need to fix this significantly missing piece. Secondly, my wife is a co-trustee for the trust. There is NO ability to add the second trustee to the return.
What's great about it: Automated process
What's not so great: Can't download all the income/capital gains from broker site to appropriate form.

Corporate Tax Virgin

2016 was the first year I had to prepare a tax return for my S-Corp law firm. TurboTax Business provided easy-to-follow prompts and clear explanations.
I ended up finishing my corporate taxes in less than four hours, and that included having to manually total my revenues.
What's great about it: Easy and efficient to use.
What's not so great: Can't really think of any.

Business - not quite like the personal versions

I'm a loyal Intuit and TurboTax customer for must be 20 years now.
The last several of these years, I've become self-employed and have been using TurboTax Business edition for my small business...it's better than spending hours with an accountant, but I'm sorry to say, it's nowhere near as solid as the consumer products.
As an example, they have you print, sign and scan a signature page for efile before they do a final check on your return. If the check finds any problems that cause you to change anything, you need to repeat that whole print, sign and scan process again since the page has a summary of your taxes. Little things like that make the product feel like it's fighting against you.
Biggest issue, however, is that the software seems buggy in some spots.
After spending time getting my balance sheet reconciled, I got all the way through my return before the final check stopped me because two numbers from different forms were out of balance. Turns out that reconciling the balance sheet never went back and carried my changes through the rest of my return, and I ended up needing to almost start from scratch.
A few other picky things...
As a Mac user, troubles me that TurboTax Business is only available for Windows...every year, I hold my breath that my 2009 copy of Windows will still run.
The installation process is also pretty cumbersome - it brings in a lot of Microsoft prerequisites, and if you need them, you're in for at least one reboot.
Anyway, I'm sure it's not a big seller for Intuit, but I'd certainly encourage them to put a few more resources into making TurboTax Business as solid as their consumer products.
What's great about it: Inexpensive, fast, simple
What's not so great: Not as full-featured as the consumer products
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
