Not so good this year
on April 16, 2017

I prepare federal and state taxes for two trusts. One after the other, the process was different for the second one. Foreign taxes paid were addressed on the first, but not the second. 1099-B items were processed on the first, but not the second. To the extent that I know what is required, I was able to correct the ommission, but I'm an 81-year-old widow and don't know enough to get it right! I was very disappointed with the performance of this year's software. When TT did the review, I changed some things and doubt that what I did was really correct, but TT whipped right through on the second review and said that everything was fine. I really doubt that but had to accept it and file. I've used TT for at least 15 years but every year the process gets more difficult and I get older and less able to deal with it. I don't want to go through this next year but don't feel I can afford to pay a professional.
What's great about it: My initial impression was good (as usual)
What's not so great: The software didn't perform as well as in the past

Been Using it for Decades
on April 16, 2017
Posted by: DJEngineer
Have been using TurboTax since the 1980's. It is the only way to do your taxes. It takes the complexity out of doing your taxes. No worry about making a math mistake or forgetting a needed form. Enter the data and it does the rest of the work.
What's great about it: The math is always correct, plug and chug.
What's not so great: There were extra pages added to 8489 not needed

Getting less cool each year
on April 16, 2017
Posted by: AndyClarke
Overall this program seems to have lost many features I remember. Although it still transfers last year's file, it asks YOU to go back and find numbers that are in those files. This year I had to have TurboTax 2015 and 2016 running at the same time, one on the left and one on the right side on my monitor. That seemed unnecessary and cumbersome. One should be able to open the new return with full automatic access to the prior year's entries. The fact that you can't means TurboTax is much much less than it could or should be. On Home and office, if you enter an expense like vehicle expense under business, be careful not to enter it under job-related expenses in personal. It seems redundant when it comes up again in step-by-step, but it's a different category and will result in double entry, which TurboTax will not catch.
What's great about it: review
What's not so great: allows double entry, no check

Frustrating
on April 17, 2017

I found this very frustrating - I don't know how anyone with little knowledge could possibly complete correctly. Difficult to move around from page to page. I knew how the forms should be filled out, but I could not find the proper place to do so. Never again, sorry, most exasperating time consuming experience.
What's great about it: E-filing was simple
What's not so great: Frustrating moving around in forms
