I own a small business and prepare my own return. I've used H&R Block Premium & Business for several years, but wanted to try Turbo Tax to see if it provided any more guidance in completing the forms. Essentially it was the same, and completing the forms requires the basic accounting knowledge that it does to complete the forms by hand. I'd love to see more interview-style questions in layman's terms like you see in personal tax prep software.
What's great about it: Automatically calculates SEP contribution and electronically files 1099s.
What's not so great: Minimal guidance on completing the forms

Good except for Balance Sheet
on March 13, 2017

Easy to use except for the Balance Sheet. Sheet is always out of balance because business meals aren't a full deduction and you have to manually go in and compensate for that.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Balance sheet is always off because of business meals. It does not seem be be able to automatically compensate for that.

Small S-Corp $-Saver
on March 13, 2017

Great for small S-corp business. Not great at making all the different deadlines apparent and clear (paper VS efile; which due when). Has room for custom expenses. Much cheaper than a tax preparer for simple s-corp work.
What's great about it: Step-by-step and forms views, details for %shareholders, additional space for unique deductions
What's not so great: Bug in W-2 (Line 12--if you enter zeros, then you cannot delete them), W-2 & 1099 E-file deadlines hard to find

On completion the software could be clearer on how to file the state forms. When you complete the Federal forms and print you are left to figure out going back to print the state forms so you can paper file as Colorado dos not appear to except e-filing. Also unlike the Federal information the system does not tell you the filing dates for the state.
What's great about it: Simple and easy to do
What's not so great: unclear on State actions

estate filing for grandchildren

This is my first year to file trust 1041s, and this was easy. I just followed the step by step guidance and entered the data from our consolidated R-1099. Done in an hour. We could have imported the information since our investment company is a partner; however, there was no option to do so. Importing would have been safer for us, since I'm no accountant. that said Turbotax probably saved us hundreds of dollars in filing costs.
What's great about it: clear, fast, done
What's not so great: wish we could import the R-1099

Program is excellent, password stinks
on March 14, 2017

I purchased the federal program at a store so I had a physical CD. I then have to pay to get the state. I used the program for both a trust and an LLC. When trying to purchase the state, it would not accept my password. I reset the password, it would still not accept it. After multiple tries, I called support and they sent me a different link that then worked. 2 days later I tried the same thing for the LLC and the same problem occurred. I give up! I just bought it and manually reentered the payment information. I can see that I could make a mistake with the password, but NOT 6 times.
What's great about it: Confident all tax scenarios are covered
What's not so great: Password to sign on is problematic

THANK YOU!!!

This was the first year that I had to file a Form 1041 as the Trustee of a Irrevocable Trust. I had to call for help twice: Once to find a NOL form, the second to give me a little help to fix a couple of errors. Both times the persons that helped me were patient (even as a college graduate, this was a daunting task for me) and were able to talk me through the corrections. E-FILED!! Finished!
What's great about it: Easy to answer questions to complete 1041
What's not so great: Difficult to find some forms
