mixed feelings

I have been using TurboTax since the DOS version so feel like I am stuck at this point. The state program add-on is particularly weak. One general feature that is missing is the ability to enter the step-by-step at the point you are currently at or at least the step-by-step for the form you are in. Instead it takes you back to the general module you are in and you have to go through the same Q&A that you have already answered.
What's great about it: familiarity
What's not so great: costly, added cost of state(s), weak help dialogues, limited support for state return

Good but not accurate

I filled in info from a 1099-b and said it was from a 1099-b, However in the printed form to IRS it said info was not from a 1099-b. I went back and re entered info and same wrong result. No way to get quick help on this is the worst problem. Worry that something more important is wrong ????
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Did not fill in correct check boxes

Needs Improvement for Us Amatures

Two quick things: 1. It would be great if I did not have to purchase two different TT models. S Corp filing (1120S) should be covered under one product (i.e. Home and Business), even if you have to charge a bit more for it. It's too complicated going back and forth between two different programs.
2. I feel a but uneasy when it comes to depreciations and assets...my only asset is a company vehicle, but I can never tell if TT is doing this right or not, because I am not an accountant, do not know the jargon, and have no clue about how such things are actually supposed to be calculated. It would be great if TT's walk through on this, was a bit more user friendly when it comes to understanding the numbers.
What's great about it: Easy step by steps
What's not so great: No way of assuring depreciations etc, without being an accountant

File Naming Conventions
on September 12, 2017
Posted by: Brianey
Please use different file name extensions for the "home" and "business 1120-S" versions of TurboTax.
Currently the extension "*.tax2016" is used for both pieces of software. Thereby, double-clicking on my "home" tax file will inappropriately fire up the business version of TurboTax.
For example, consider these: *.tax_individual_2016 for "home" *.tax_1120s_2016 for "business"
What's not so great: Same naming convention

Unable to file electronically 1120
on September 12, 2017

1) SS #'s of officers, didn't have "-" (dashes in them 2) EFTPS confirmation #'s were missing 2 leading 0's (zeros) 3) 1120, Sch M1, line 8b, had a line with a doilar amount without a description. It allowed me to edit the description, but then it bumped the amount down a line and then said I needed a description for that line. went thru that routine several times (kept bumping down the keyed amt) and had to finally exit to 'Print and File by mail' tried this several times. Next day I went back into the return and went to Line 8b, and fixed the no description and then filed electronically, but turbotax wouldn't let me check the box to electronically pay the $1600 I owed? It kept saying I could ck the electronically pay box if I was mailing the return?
What's great about it: mostly good software (for 1120)
What's not so great: e-file found errors that Turbotax didn't

OK but there's issues

For filing our S Corp tax returns electronically: 1) I could not find anywhere an official e-file certification that the IRS or state would need as proof of filing the S corp's fed and state returns. The cute emails are not sufficient proof. Where's official fed and state (Calif) e-filing certification for S Corp? 2) The 1120S federal return pages did not have any taxpayer id info printed on top of each page. (The state return did have this, however.) 3) For our S Corp's Form 1099-DIV, federal e-file was easy to do but Turbotax did not e-file one for state (Calif) and provided virtually no info on how to do it. Turbotax should provide both fed and state e-filing for this. We file in Calif. 4) It is a mystery as to exactly what tax return pages were e-filed to fed and state. I had created a Miscellaneous Statement in Turbotax but don't know if it was included in e-filed returns. It shows up on the printed version for our records, but there were Misc Stmt issues on the printed versions...see 5 below. 5) When I created both a federal and a Calif state Miscellaneous Statement in Turbotax, the fed return printed its one statement (ok) but the state printed 2 statements (why?). I found no way to correct this for the state return. When I deleted the state's Misc Statement, no statement printed for state BUT no federal Misc Statement printed as part of the federal attachment. Buggy. And who knows what statements were attached in the e-filings (see #4 above).
What's great about it: Quick, easy, basic
What's not so great: No certification for e-filing - No taxpayer id on each page of fed return - No state 1099-DIV efiling - Misc Stmts buggy

Needs some tweaks

It took 5x longer to enter in information than it should have. You need quickbooks installed on same computer in order to import it.
They should have more import options, and not require quickbooks go be on same computer. It would be useful to be able to import depreciable assets from a spreadsheet.
There were some problems/bugs with the balance sheet. It seems to get some information from the depreciable assets but it did not show you what. This made the numbers in balance sheet not add up.
What's great about it: Able to get the job done. I like ability to flag areas to go back to.
What's not so great: Needs better import ability. Entering depreciable assets needs to be made more efficient.
