Really Nice BB-8 Robot with some issues.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Wow. I've had some 'robots' in the past, but this one is by far the best so far. But it still has some flaws.
I didn't realize how big this was until I opened the box. I assumed the robot was going to be really small but that is not the case. This was very easy to assembly (there are basically 2 pieces and antennas). I was a little disappointed that there was only one power adapter for the body and a micro-usb to usb cable for the head (to plug into a system or universal power adapter)
After charging overnight, my kids and I raced to put the head on bb-8s body and to start playing. He turns on really nice, there is a red light on his body to show its on, and a white light on his head to show they are on. Getting the head to connect to the body took a few mins to figure out. It's held in place by magents, and you know its installed properly, when you hear the startup sound. He turned on an surprised us with his head rotation and sounds.
There are 3 remote control modes. (Motion, Voice Commands, and Follow) The motion with the remote control is very sensitive. Even slightly moving him, he takes off. Here is the downfall, if it goes to fast or hit's something the head comes flying off. I understand its a 'sphero' type of robot, but the kids were disappointed when the head kept falling off on our hardwood floors. We moved him on to carpet and made sure his head was on correctly and he handled the carpet a lot better than the hardwood floor.
The voice commands, work really well. There is a list of 10 different commands bb-8 responds to. It worked with my voice and my children's voice really well. My kids love the stand guard mode the best. One of the voice commands - is bb-8 come closer, and it actually moves closer to the person speaking.
The follow setting is disappointing. You are supposed to clip the remote control to your pocket and walk within 5-6 ft and bb-8 does follow. It seems a little clunky it worked if we were more like 6-10 inches in front of bb-8 and walked really slow.
Overall this is a really nice toy for my (4 and 9 year old boys) They really love the size, and the talking commands. Again we are still getting used to the remote control since its very sensitive. I would have given the rating 5 stars, but with BB-8's head falling off during the remote control settings I had to reduce the star rating to 4.
If anyone in your family is a star wars fan, it's really nice to have your own bb-8

Star Wars Hero BB-8 Droid

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Just opened up my Star Wars BB-8 Droid and it is bigger than I expected. This is no small toy by any means. After giving it a full charge, off we went. It is a fun toy, but it needs lots of open space. It does not maneuver like an RC car. It moves forward and backwards easy enough, but the way it turns is more of a lean to one direction as opposed to a sharp turn so it arcs.
This toy is very cool and I have not tested it outside yet. So the dilemma is to clear enough indoor space to get the full experience of it or go outside and risk scuffing it up on the pavement. The head does fall off at times and although not annoying yet, I could see it becoming that way in the end. It is really well built, but the charging ports are held on by a little plastic piece that seems will break over time which means you will not have a piece covering the charging port which is unsightly.
I would recommend this toy for the Star Wars fan and especially the collectors. If you want it solely as a toy, make sure you have the room to enjoy all the features or it will bump around your house like a Rumba.

Cool BB-8 Hero

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a cool product. Opened up the large box and and let the head and body charge for around a hour, then I was ready to go! You can control it via a set of voice commands or with the included remote control and use the commands in the guide and he will respond, nice technology. Say "intruder" and he rolls his way to you buzzing and beeping all the way! It comes with rechargeable batteries so you don't have to worry about the expense of replacing batteries. The remote is a bit cumbersome but you need to get used to it.You can even attach the remote to your belt or pocket and BB-8 will follow you around! A few tips: BB-8 definitely needs to be on a flat surface. He does tend to bump into things and he we very heavy so watch your feet! At the top of the remote is an "animate" button that allows you to send random commands to BB-8. My daughter is 11 and she enjoyed it and so did I so my complaints are few.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was pleasantly surprised to the see the size of the BB-8 Droid when it was delivered. It was much larger and heavier than I expected. I was definitely excited to start it up! But before I powered it up, I let the base and head charge up until it was full charged (highly recommended to ensure it stays powered up when you are figuring out how to use it). The base is quite large and has the main power switch. One thing to note, you must ensure the base, head and remote are all on the same frequency (A,B, or C). This is actually a pretty cool feature on the off chance someone else has another Star Ward Droid or if you happen to purchase 2 so the remote frequencies will not interfere with each other (I could remember from my childhood that we could only operate one R/C car at a time if they were both running on the same frequency). The BB-8 remote control function take a little getting used to. You will need an open space when operating BB-8 as it moves rapidly at times and takes a wide turn. The only downside to the BB-8 is when it collides into a wall or cabinet the head may fall off. The head is secured to the base with magnets and stays on for the most part. You must ensure the head is secured to the based magnet before moving it. Other than that the BB-8 is a blast. The voice commands work well. I especially love the ability of the BB-8 to show character (especially when you use the “Droid Please” command). Overall, it is a great product and fun to play with!

The Droid You Are Looking For

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I'm a huge Star Wars fan so I was crazy excited to get this toy.
It is much bigger than I thought is would be. It really is the size of BB8. The head and body are separate. You have to charge each before using it. I think it would have been better if they could have found a way to plug the head into the body to charge. Once I got everything charged I encountered my only challenge. There is no designation for where to put the head. The directions are not very clear. The head attaches with magnets. It took some trial and error to get the head to stay on while he moved. I recommend starting him up on carpet so you don't crack the head. Once we got the head on correctly we had a blast. We tried all 3 modes. In RC mode you need to make sure you have plenty of room. He has a wide turning radius and will smash into furniture. The voice response is fun. My favorite is the "Droid please" command. When you say it he rolls his head around like he's got an attitude. He beeps and lights up just like the original.
I used it nonstop for about 15-17 minutes. The head ran out of gas first. This time I left the head attached and used a longer usb cord. All in all its a fun remote control toy. The directions could have used a little extra detail with regards to attaching the head. If you're a Star Wars fan this is the droid you were looking for. May the Force be with you.

BEST BB-8 Droid for Star Wars Collectors
on October 24, 2017

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Our entire family is lifelong Star Wars fans and our teenage son has a large display of vintage Star Wars collectibles in his room, so when we heard about the newly released ‘BB-8 Hero’ we were dying to check out his size, quality and film-accurate aesthetics in person. This BB-8 is nothing short of amazing! His paint finish is matte with traces of wear and tear, not glossy like the other BB-8 toys currently offered at stores. The cinematic BB-8 stands just over 26 inches tall which makes this 16” BB-8 Droid (19” with antenna) from SpinMaster the most impressive near life-size replica offered to date. The packaging is absolutely stunning as well and falls in line with the Star Wars ‘Black Series’ collector’s edition figures.
After inspecting and admiring our new BB-8 and his packaging, we set him up to charge. The head and body are two separate pieces, each with its own battery and power port. It is very important to fully charge Ni-MH batteries so they will perform well and for a long time. The spherical body is charged by a Wall Mount plug and the dome head is charged via USB cable. A wall plug adapter for the USB cable is not included, but you can use a USB Phone wall adapter or plug him into any computer USB port for charging. Once he’s fully charged, he’s ready for assembly. It’s a little tricky aligning the magnets to get the head on securely. If half the magnets are misaligned, the head will be less stable when in motion. A handheld RF remote with dual joysticks is provided to manually control and steer your BB-8. The RF signal strength is superior to the Infrared version used by competitors. You don’t need to point the remote directly at the droid or be within very close proximity for it to perform well. The droid’s spherical body travels around by ‘rolling’ just like the cinematic version, with his half-sphere head perched on top leaning towards the direction of movement. Even priced at $229, our expectations were reasonable. I do not expect a smooth, circular, plastic bodied ‘BB-8’ to have the same control and maneuverability as you would get with a 4 wheeled rubber tire vehicle. BB-8 picks up quite a bit of speed on hardwood floors and this has led to many collisions. Occasionally BB-8's magnetically-attached head has bounced off during impact. We found that BB-8 maneuvers and responds most accurately on short pile carpeting. BB-8 Hero is quite a character, his mannerisms are entertaining, just like in the movie. In ‘Voice Command’ Mode when you talk to your BB-8 he will turn his head and track your voice. BB-8 responds when you say his name and several other voice commands. For example, he will beep and chirp with lights flashing in delight when asked “Have you seen Rey?”, but if you say “Kylo Ren” or “Stormtroopers” his mannerism is totally opposite, he starts backing away and trembling in fear. In ‘Follow Me’ Mode you clip the remote on your belt and BB-8 will follow you around doing his best to keep up with your pace, which would be perfect for cosplay enthusiasts or act as the ultimate Halloween accessory. I would definitely limit the amount of time he spends on pavement though, I’d be fearful the paint and molded plastic would get permanently damaged.
We absolutely, 100% recommend the SpinMaster BB-8 Hero for any Star Wars fan looking for a realistic BB-8 with Collector level quality!

A Good BB-8

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was a little skeptical about this toy at first but it got a lot better after I got it out of the box and tried it out. First of all I thought this would be one of those lame BB-8 toys again, but a number of things changed my mind. First of all this thing is big. This thing is a little bigger than my small dog and almost the same size as our biggest cat. This thing is also pretty sturdy and a bit heavy too. It impressed me how tough this thing looked. Besides being heavy this thing was also painted very well and had some good detail. It was a little dirty looking like it had been rolling around in the sand. We charged the units up (the head and the body) and after they were fully charged we tried out some things. We first put BB-8 in follow me mode. I was quite impressed that BB-8 followed the wearer of the controller quite well. It was very amusing. We next tested the voice commands and this worked well to. Depending on what you say BB-8 follow a hard coded set of commands. This worked for me and my son but not my daughter all the time. After testing these things we tried the controls. This was actually kind of complicated and it controlled ok. My daughter could not control it well and crashed it into the wall a few times. This caused BB-8's head to pop off, but it was easy to put it back on.
Overall, the voice controls worked, the follow me mode worked, and the controls were ok.
One more thing I need to add. It is really cool to see the ball under BB-8s head move around. The head appears to be floating and has a cool affect.
I would have to give this toy 4 stars. While it is not perfect it looks really cool and mostly does what it says it will do.
