Does it's job but...

It does it's job for a while then fails as the usb c connection is not very secure so wears out over time, it's also way to expensive and large to begin with, definitely not replacing it, external audio it is from now I guess.

Clunky and expensive but works

I have a GoPro Hero 8 Black, after trying a few cheaper alternatives (none of which worked) I finally bought it. Like most proprietary stuff, its expensive (and quite clumsy), but the audio is clean. It's awful that there is no user manual, nor can one monitor audio while using it, unless I am missing something? I am using it with my Sennheiser wireless mics and my input option was "powered mic". It worked seamlessly. I do not know where or how to hang it??

Essential for high-quality audio

This item had been out of stock everywhere for so long that I wondered if it would ever be available again. Lots of 3rd-party gougers trying to get double MSRP or more due to this, but I didn't need one that badly... Finally got it preordered on amazon.ca for a reasonable price.
All testing was done with a GoPro 6 Black. If you’re using a different model, your mileage may vary.
After you connect this unit to your GoPro, you'll have a new option to select in preferences / IO - Audio Input. This is where where you set the audio input type - options are standard mic, standard mic+ (gain boost), powered mic, powered mic+ (gain boost), line input.
When I first connected the unit and tried recording a video with an external mic, I got a lot of distortion on the recording, not sure exactly why. After pulling the battery and resetting everything, it worked perfectly.
Line input worked great for the higher input levels that you would get from an external sound mixing device. Line input is unbalanced -10 dBV. For connection to pro audio devices that have balanced +4 dBu outputs, I use an Ebtech Line Level Shifter to do correct balanced to unbalanced line level matching. You could probably get by with a balanced to unbalanced adapter cable, just make sure you aren’t overloading the mic adapter’s input with levels that are too “hot”.
I've seen some speculation that having wi-fi enabled, or charging the GoPro while using it, may cause issues. I have my GoPro connected to a high capacity external battery pack via the mic adapter’s USB-C port, with wi-fi enabled, and it all appears to work fine. No RF interference or other audio issues that I could hear. Long recording sessions could cause the GoPro to overheat, of course, I haven't tried recording for an hour to see what happens.
One very quirky thing that I discovered is that, if you don't have an internal battery installed, you won't be able to see this audio input device in the IO menu. It still appears to pass audio, but you won't be able to make any changes. This means that you can't power the GoPro solely from an external battery pack connected to the mic adapter's USB C port and make full use of the mic adapter. This is unfortunate, as the GoPro would be less likely to overheat during a long recording without an internal battery installed. This may only be an issue with the 6 Black, perhaps someone with another model could try to replicate this issue.
The mic adapter is a very unwieldy thing to have hanging off your GoPro. I’ve ordered a camera cage made by Ulanzi that has a vertical space below the camera to hold the mic adapter; this hopefully will make it more useful when mobile.

Bought and used for live streaming, worked the first 10 times I used it then just stopped working. Contacted GoPro and they sent me a replacement which was nice but it came in a bag unpackaged and did not work. Waiting to see if they'll send another replacement. Disappointed at the quality given the price.

Multiple GoPros, multiple mics. Silent videos. Less than useless.

This is a ripoff. A regular 3.5 to usb-c adapter is completely compatible. I will never buy another gopro.
