I love this case. I've dropped my phone numerous times without incident. Overall design, fit and durability is great.
I had to get a replacement case after I pulled a little to hard to remove it, when cleaning dust off my iPhone one day. The process of getting a replacement was flawless. A couple of emails and a new case was on the way. OtterBox have excellent customer service. So if you have an issue with your case even if its discolored, email them. Send in a few photos of your issue and they'll send out a new one no questions asked. Brilliant!!!!
Pros: High quality, Durable
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does not live up to the OtterBox name or price

I first want to start off by saying how disappointed I am in the quality of this case. The white silicone skin was discolored within minutes of me taking it out of the box and, after a little over a month of use, the polycarbonate outer shell has cracked at the power button. There are also a lot of rough edges from a terrible mold job. The reason I bought this case was because I had the iPhone 3G/3GS Commuter TL Series Case and it was a great case. I had the 3GS case in white and never had any problems with stains or discoloration. The only reason I bought the 4S case was because I had such a great experience with my old 3GS case. I have to say that this 4S case does not live up the expectation of the OtterBox name nor the price I paid for it. The only thing that I can figure that cracked the outer case was it slipping out of my hand and falling about a foot onto the kitchen table. If the case cannot withstand a tiny fall like that, I definitely do not trust it to protect my very expensive iPhone. Not sure if I got a faulty case or are all of them discolored and cracking. Sounds like most people are having problems with the white silicone.
Cons: Low quality, Not durable, discolored, cracked
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Some friends and I went on a long hard hike. Afterwards saying good bye's, we were taking our group photos at the cars. Stupidly, I laid my iPhone 4s face down the the rear roof of my CR-V and forgot it was there. I drove on heavily curvy backroads and in some instances at speeds up to 65 mph..... for 23 miles. Upon arrival at my home, I couldn't find my phone and in a smack on the forehead moment remembered leaving it on the roof of my car, at the hiking site, in sprinkling rain. With the aid or a fast thinking friend and a find your iPhone app, we located the phone! Still operable and sending out a beacon! Upon arrival, I shuddered to look. Laying face up on the side of the road was my fully functioning phone nary a scratch.. Not a ding!
It was protected in a OtterBox Commuter case that has already taken it's share of abuse and guess what? The case has 2 small cracks and some scrapes but still fits! I called OtterBox to share this story and the super nice lady further made my experience delightful! A company committed to full customer service! I'm SOLD! I fully believe the rubberized inner membrane kept the phone from sliding off my roof all those miles. If the Commuter does this well, what's the Defender capable of?
Pros: High quality, Durable, gravity defying?
Cons: not a one

This product is absolutely amazing! I bought it in November and it is now late February and my iphone has remained in perfect condition through tons and tons of drops. It offers great protection, a classy, simple style. It even shows off the Apple symbol so that you can show off your status symbol. I absolutely adore this product and I wouldn't use any other brand. Otter Box has probably saved the life of my phone many, many times!
I love this case but then I realized a couple days later the white became very dirty :'( Also the flap that protects where you plug it in to charge doesn't like to get tucked back in.
Pros: Durable
Cons: dirty easily, battery charge flap
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good thing I didn't rely on a lot of the reviews..

Just after I placed an order for the Commuter for my brand new 4s, I stumbled across a lot of the reviews on this site. They sounded overly negative and I thought Otterbox may have missed the mark without me even seeing the case. One reviewer even suggested I return the case without even opening up the box. I ALMOST did that. Almost. I even contacted the online retailer before the case arrived and started the RMA process.
I'm glad I opened the box. I must admit, I fully expected to see some sort of rushed to market product with flaws all over based on what I had read. It didn't help that I struggled a bit to get the plastic case over the rubber one right from the get gi. Once it was in place, the case is almost perfect.
There is a little gap that looks mildly unfinished at the top of the assembled case, but it seems to have settled over time and is fine now. You would have to be VERY picky to not like this design.
I like how the phone and case fit in my hand. I like how solid it feels with the case. Before now I hadn't owned a case which shows off the Apple logo and the look is sort of growing on me now. I think that showing off the logo is a bit pretentious actually, so not a huge selling point for me. Everyone knows what an iPhone is without showing off the logo in a "look at me" sort of way. Not my style overall. I know it's a selling point to many. Whatever floats your boat.
I haven't brought myself to put a screen protector on. I had one on when I first got the phone and didn't care for it. I like how the screen tracks without a protector. I'm the same way with my iPad 2. I'm pretty careful with my phones. So I haven't put on the Otterbox protector and may not.
For anyone who complains about the case being a bit "slippery", then just keep the case screen side down when not using it. The rubbery frame keeps the phone in one place for the most part and protects the screen at the same time as the screen is recessed a bit with the case on. I don't find the case slippery, even when storing it screen up.
I do like the rubber plug protectors, but I am a bit annoyed with the direction the main port cover opens. I have a great "Pro-Clip" dock in my car and there is no way I can use this case with the dock unless I cut off the cover. I won't do that. It's just too difficult to try and hold the cover open while sliding it into the dock at the same time. I'd seen similar complaints elsewhere about using the Commuter in similar docking solutions. Looks like I'm using my Speck Pixel HD for road trips. I would have preferred not to have to resort to that. You can't win them all.
I wouldn't argue with Otterbox if they came out with a design that opens the opposite way and sent me the new version just for pointing this out to them. (j/k....well sort of).
Otterbox has a winner with this case. I don't have a desire to get a Defender. Too bulky for my tastes. This case is a great compromise of solid protection and keeping the phone "svelte". I'd never have to take the case off ever if it worked with my dock.
Despite some of the quirks, I give it a solid 5/5. I had used a Commuter on the Blackberry Bold 9000 my iPhone replaced and liked that case too. The iPhone 4s offering is better.
Just remember to use get the 4s version of you have a 4s. I understand you'll be disappointed if you try and use the earlier renditions of this case on a 4s.
Nice work, Otterbox.
Pros: Durable, great balance of protection and bulk, decent price/protection balance
Cons: tricky to take on and off., can't use with pro-clip dock
