Terrible product, NOT ready to use out of the box

Opened and followed the instructions, downloaded the app and the product did not work, nothing happened. I downloaded their app on a Mac and Windows PC (top of the line models) and the device never worked. The solution presented to me was to use another cable. What if I didn't have another cable? Well multiple cables were used and none worked. Rather than continue I just returned it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Portable toy for 3-4 year olds

This is a fun and interactive product - great for 3 and 4 year olds! LeapFrog always has the best age-appropriate learning toys, and this one is no different.
Pros:
The "pen" is the perfect size and weight for little hands to navigate.
The toy is very exploratory - great for this age, and it means the books can "grow" with the child as the try new things
Educational and age appropriate
Portable!!
Cons:
Price point is a little high for me with the books - and you will want multiple books!
I don't think it's super intuitive for a kid to snap the book into the tray.
Pros:

Great Educational Fun for Younger Kids

We have been a LeapFrog family since my now six and eight year old's were toddlers - and we were very excited to have my soon to be first-grader test out the new LeapStart that LeapFrog sent us to review.
My son took to it right away and enjoyed the pre-loaded activities and plenty of engaging material in the "Reading Adventures with Health & Safety" book for the 4-6 age range. It has helped him to read non-fiction text, learn about birds, insects and even make stew and s'mores! I like the fact that the device is not an actual screen. Its durable design is great for the pre-school set - featuring a chunky stylus and fun foldable case. At a very reasonable price point, it's a great device for education fun for younger children.

Good device

My daughter has been using this for over a year now. It helped with her ABC and numbers and she is now using it with the learn to read books.
I did not have any trouble with downloading and installing any of the books. Leap Connect pretty much tells you what you need to do. Downloading and installing all 6 books at one time took about 5 minutes.
Pros: Fun for kids, Grows with child

great interactive learning

My five year old has absolutely loved her LeapStart and now our little guy can start playing on it too. There are so many books in different levels perfect for kids from preschool to 2nd grade (ish).
Pros: Educational, Fun for kids, Good for on-the-go play, Grows with child

Thrilled with this system

This product has been provided by VTech so I could experience it with my family; however, the thoughts and opinions are all my own.
We are absolutely thrilled with the LeapStart system for my 5 year-old son. He has some mild developmental delays and his preschool teachers and I are working hard to get him Kindergarten ready for the next school year. He's well on his way, and LeapStart is giving him a big boost. He treats it like a tablet and I love that it's so much fun he doesn't feel like he's coming home from preschool only to have more organized learning waiting for him at home. Plus since it's not backlit like a tablet, I'm fine with him playing with it in bed at night for a little while as a way to wind down.
We only have three of the accompanying books so far, but I know we'll be getting more with Christmas coming up.

Good tool to help prep for Kindergarten!

One of my five year old twin boys has amblyopia. Due to this his eye doesn't transmit to his brain what he is looking at. He has struggled to learn his letters, numbers, etc. Since receiving this product I have watched him go from refusing to try to learn them out of frustration, to begging me to play with his LeapStart so he can "learn." He is able to grab his LeapStart and immediately have fun while learning at the same. The stylus allows him to have help when needed and challenges him with more questions and fun.
While he hasn't mastered all letters in the short time we have had this system he is able to recognize over half and this is such a huge accomplishment. I can't wait to see how he will continue to grow as he works on reading skills, math and more.
Another great feature is how easy it is to take with us when we travel. Not overly bulky or heavy, he can put it in his back pack and be entertained why we take long trips to go visit family!

Perfect for little learners of all ages

The LeapStart has been a great tool for my kindergartener to use! It's easy for kids to use without much (if any) help from an adult so it helps to build little one's self confidence which is a great benefit to something that's already super educational.
My daughter loves tracing and tapping the things inside to hear all of the fun different noises and sounds. Tracing letters and numbers is a favorite activity of my little one's and it's showing in her school work. My daughter's teacher said her reading and writing have gotten drastically better, so I can't think of anything besides is the LeapStart system I have to thank. Great item for little learners of all ages.
