Disappointing on several levels

This unit was part of the appliance package that came with construction of a new house. Since it was not one of the lower-end units I decided not to upgrade the machine to a better (read more expensive) one. Big mistake. The GE dishwasher (unfortunately I do not know the model number) that was supplied by a landlord (yeah, you read that correctly) in a previous home was head and shoulders above this one. This does a quasi-decent job of cleaning dishes which is its primary purpose but from there it's all downhill:
1. Noisy! During wash cycles it's noisier than most other dishwashers I've been in the presence of but tolerable... until it changes cycles. Then it lets out with a bang as if someone is hammering something inside - a noise loud enough to startle you if you're anywhere nearby or even when distracted by a TV in the next room.
2. The entire unit feels flimsy:
a. The racks are poorly fitted (i.e. designed) and often bang into the door parts when sliding out and not infrequently go off their tracks.
b. The plastic handle grip you use to open the door is rough and scratchy to the touch - an example of the poor finishing job done on this thing in general.
c. The silverware basket fits sloppily in its area and often has to be repositioned when loading and unloading.
d. The door to the detergent holder is a flimsy plastic piece (that feels like it's ready to snap off or break into pieces with minimal force) that rotates to the side but makes it difficult to put in detergent "pacs". The design of the rinse agent reservoir is also poor. These components on my previous unit were far better in design and sturdiness.
3. Poor design of several components - i.e., the dish holders on the racks for some reason are too steeply slanted and makes for difficulty in loading certain types of dishes, glasses or cups and mugs. And then whatever you load there often will not stay in place - the mug or glass will fall to one side or the other. Utterly ridiculous design... the geometry of the racks in the previous unit I had were fine... why they "fixed" something that wasn't broken is another testament to not knowing when to leave something alone! The previous unit held more items - especially larger glassware - due to the better design of the racks and the dish holders as well as the location and design of the silverware basket.

I've come to accept - with considerable chagrin - that virtually nothing is made "like it used to be" - i.e., to last or at least not have parts that are so marginally made that they appear they will not survive even relatively modest occasional misuse, or redesigns just for the sake of redesign that do nothing to improve - and often denigrate - performance and/or utility. For what should be a mid-grade unit, this particular one is a big step down from what I had before and with its quality issues I would not recommend it at any price.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
