Dissapointed

I wanted to love the 79X900B and did a lot of research on all of the 4K TVs 75" and up. I loved the design of the TV and the speakers rocked. The finish of this TV is outstanding. Colors are impressive and 4K content is truly stunning. Being an IPS panel and having passive 3D, I had high hopes for this TV and had it in my home for a week.
As far as 3D, it was a blurry mess and we tried multiple sources and BLU-Ray films. You also have to watch 3D dead center or you will see images outlined and blurred (So don't watch 3D if you are mounting this TV higher than eye level or it will look like you are not wearing the 3D glasses when in fact you are).
Black levels were very poor, actually grey and not anywhere near black (I would describe it as asphalt grey watching any source or content).
I had a dead pixel on the screen and severe light bleed 8 inches up the left side of the panel and the entire top right corner. It was very noticeable unless we were watching a bright scene. When we watched something in letterbox, the light bleed was a true eye sore. I called Sony before I returned the TV and they said light bleed and dead pixels are not covered under warranty and they are normal in their production process. I was considering trying another set but that response forced me to return the TV and go with another brand.
The reviews on all of the other size X900Bs are great but this 79" unit should not have been launched. The back-lighting seemed as if a floodlight was being held behind a film strip and local dimming didn't help much.
I consider myself somewhat technical and we tried multiple settings with very little improvement. It was suggested that we turn the back light down to 2 and Eco to High but that was just too dark for normal viewing and only an an attempt to hide the sets weaknesses.
Perhaps I got a bad panel but other reviews are similar.

Best Picture Ever?

First, let me say I am impressed with the clarity, color depth, black levels and overall presentation of the Sony XBR70X850B monitor. And it would have gotten a 5 Star rating except for the extremely frustrating difficulty in getting this TV to make the HDMI "handshake" with several audio visual receivers, and HT processors that have the required specifications to support higher level resolution signals. The problem persists so a word of warning to prospective buyers...be prepared to dump your HDMI switching scheme via AVR or processor in favor of individual HDMI connections to the monitor from each source with a corresponding parallel audio connection from each source to your AVR or processor. The last part only applies to those who eschew having the monitor process the audio.
Now, out with the bad and in with the good. I was not trying to "future proof" my viewing pleasure by selecting a 4K capable TV. Rather, I was looking for the best picture and, to my eye, the Sony XBR line of 4K TV's wins the best picture ever award when compared to standard resolution LED and plasma monitors.
With very little tweaking on the settings you can settle in and enjoy a fantastic result, even when viewing non-4K content. Regardless of whether you are viewing a 1080p BluRay, your standard 720p cable fare or other similar content, you will definitely see a difference in quality.
The "SMART" functions are very easy to access and use. If you have a streaming BluRay player in the home, you'll notice there are other streaming options open to you now and the access menu is extremely informative and well designed.
Even though you may not be interested in 4K content, if you are looking for the Best Picture Ever, you really should preview this TV and compare it side by side with the standard LED offerings out there. You'll be glad you did.
I would recommend this to a friend!

My 71" Samsung DLP crashed on me a year ago. I had been waiting for a suitable TV for my movie room to come along. Long story short,Samsung doesn't have any kind of customer loyalty program in place. I had my eye on their 75" UHD TV.As it turns out,I ended up choosing my Sony 70" 4K TV!! This baby doesn't disappoint either. Bought a PS4 and Xbox 1 along with Sony's BDP-S6200 3D Blu-ray player also. I can't say that I've ever seen a picture this crisp and sharp!! Gonna go back and look at some of my old movies now!!! Great Job Sony!!

This TV is over the top excellent. The picture is bright, sharp, and crisp. We use it to watch TV, Netflix, and as a monitor for the gaming computer. Playing video games in 3D like Tomb Raider is fantastic. We run the HDMI cable output through the sony STR -DN1050 amplifier which auto upgrades the signals to 4K, it's excellent. Only one minor problem, after switching devices a few times from computer to Netflix and TV the audio return channel stopped sending audio to the amplifier. We had to unplug the TV for a minute and reconnect. Only has happened twice since getting the unit in August. In one word, this TV is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
4K video is very good, the TV upscale is perfect. There are review saying that the black level is "grey". I think they did not change the default setting from standard to vivid. This is the best black level TV I have ever see. The build in speaker and subwoofer is very good for flat screen TV standard. There is a problem when switch the input from 1080p (blu ray) to 4K, sometimes it will say the signal is not fit the TV, need to restart the 4K media player or TV to fix it.
I would recommend this to a friend!

I bought this TV unseen from a dealer who is also a trusted friend.
He had recently seen it at a trade show, and he was impressed with it. I needed a new large screen TV for a den at my home. He was told the Sony brand had been surpassed in the marketplace by other manufacturers, and this television represented their competitive "comeback" into the television marketplace.
It should be pointed out here that my frame of reference is a 75" Samsung which I have in my bedroom. This Samsung TV is so good, that I always marvel at how great the picture is. It is about a year old. I was tempted to buy another Samsung just like it, but I was dissuaded by my dealer friend, who thought the new Sony was better. I must now say, he was wrong.
Without going into too much detail, the blacks on the Sony are somewhat gray, and the fine detail is disappointing. The side speakers are visually unappealing, and do not sound great to my ears. The audio is OK, just not great, not natural ... kind of a mid-fi coloration.
The screen has a distracting reflection, when it is off and external lights shine upon it. It is a moire refraction pattern in the shape of "X's" with the light source in the center of each X. I have only speculation as to what this type of screen construction contributes to the ultimate picture. The Samsung has no such reflection.
What I was expecting, with the hype and the not cheap price, was a television which is competitive with, or better than, the best of today's competing televisions. That's not what I got.
The detail on the best of today's televisions seems to be the primary factor which gives one an immersive viewing experience. Extreme detail is missing on this Sony.
I can't return this television, or else I would do so. It is not terrible, just not excellent. It will be marginally acceptable in it's current location until I can justify a replacement, which I will do when I find one.
I remember when the Sony brand meant cutting-edge quality and performance. Despite the current marketing hype, I fear this is no longer the case.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
