Great 4K set
on October 16, 2014

After reviewing available 4K sets, we decided to go with the 70X850B from Sony. Competing sets from Samsung were nice as well, but they offered no 70" options, and 75" was too expensive. The Sony is not perfect, but it does offer fantastic colors, good motion handling, and decent black levels (i'm used to plasmas). 4K resolution is awesome (what little content that is available anyways), and gaming is a joy on this set. My major gripes are a lack of full color management controls, and no 10 point white balance. I have performed a full calibration with my meter and calman 5, but I can only go so far without those controls. But, I am able to get a nice, saturated image with good 'pop'. Gamma curve is difficult to get flat, but 'cinema 1' does get fairly close. Panel uniformity can also be an issue for some, but I lucked out with mine having minimal clouding. It is certainly no plasma, but the image is generally very pleasing to watch, particularly with ambient light. Overall, highly recommended!

Oustanding Colors; Easy NetFlix & Skype functions
on September 6, 2014

Have been an XBR fan for years, and the Reality Pro chip deliver phenomenal colors. Blacks have improved and are very good -- it's only when compared to the top line 950B that this TV underpeforms slightly (but it's $17,000 less than the 84". I emphazise slightly because you can discern different black tones very well and if you don't have the other TV next to you, you won't notice. But regarding colors, I don't think any other TV can deliver colors this real and so vivid. 10 out of 10.
One buys a big screen 4k TV in order to get a very high quality image on a big size display, and with this TV Sony is at the top of the market. Movies look outstandingly good; been watching House of Cards on 4k and it looks amazing! Other Blu-Ray and HD content also looks outstanding.
UPCONVERSION: this is what buyers should focus on, as there aren't that many programs in 4k. This TV upscales your HD context from 1080i I get in Comcast or 1080p on Blu-Ray to levels that I hadn't seen before on my previous XBR TV. So it's worth buying a 4k TV now because movies will look better in this TV set. I think Sony delivers the best upconversion.
The speakers deliver very good sound across the range.
I had a 7.1 home theater system, but with these new speakers sometimes I don't even bother if its to watch just a short amount of time
Reading some previous comments, it appears that one person's TV could've been damaged during transport -- there is no bleeding and not a single pixel damaged on mine. Big size: Yes... do check that it will fit on your current media unit, by measuring it and comparing it to the Specs -- I do not recommend moving the legs to the middle as it doesn't look as nice. If your TV will go on a second floor, I recommend getting the special delivery and Installation because it's very heavy -- got this for free from Sony #ask nicely#.
Finally: i got two great surprises
NetFlix - the remote has a dedicated button and in two clicks you're watching your movie/series. Streaming speed is super fast and I connected directly to the router --I don't use the Apple TV anymore for this. Quality is fantastic. The TV remote controls the NetFlix Play, Back, forward functions easily.
Skype: I remember the Epcot exhibit when you were video conferencing in TV full screen with family or friends. This is just like this - there is difference between sitting in a sofa with the family and being in front of a monitor. It works really well and the camera is integrated and Hi-Res. This is not new technology, but if you're changing a Tv that it's two years old or more it's a nice feature to have.
Haven't tried 3D yet.
Very pleased with this purchase -- highly recommeneded.

Great picture, Simple set up, Access to internet seamless. This set excels in upgrading B&W movies. It really does a wonderful job upgrading movies from TCM. Makes them look brand new. I don't have a 4K player yet so I can't comment

Another Samsung or Sony debate. Decision makers were reviews indicating that the upscaling was better and Samsung's support was not all that great. As someone who had the optical block defective TV and the replacement XBR suffer blinking lights of death scenarios, the experiences with the Sony support were like pulling teeth, but in the end were very positive.
The reviews are correct, the upscaling is very good and the 4k content is remarkable. Also, this model did not have the Netflix problem that the 65s do.
Buying TVs every 3-5 years because of defects sucks.

Awesome, Stunning, Great, Meets all my expectations and then some. With the right 3D Blu-ray player and surround sound system a theater will be obsolete. Colors are unbelievable. Capabilities are numerous, apps are endless. Worth every penny no matter when you bought it past or present! A great investment!

Received this tv at a greatly reduced price from sony, to replace a tv that took a Lightning hit. even though the damaged tv was no longer under warranty sony made it right. For this reason and the fact that sonys picture quality is superior I will always buy sony.

I just love this new 70 inch Ultra HD Sony TV. Outstanding picture, set-up is easy, and connection with my old audio system was also simple. A little more money than the Samsung and Sharp versions.......but I am very satisfied with my decision.
