crashed when checking for errors in state programs- sent info to Turbo tax Turbotax needs a way to attach explanatory statements- this is the only thing that might drive me to a professional preparer Recommend you compile a list of professional preparers who are able to upload a turbotax data file into their software- there are times I could use a consultation about a new tax issue but can do most of it myself State tax returns not as well supported with explanations and don't seem to carry over as much information as Federal
What's great about it: format easy to follow
What's not so great: surprising bug in error check, price should include e file of state return
Pros: I bought or sold investments

You've definitely improved the foreign tax credit info this year. Thanks! Big problem now is the state (TN). I filed an extension but, unfortunately, underpaid; the program had a lot of problems accepting the amount I filed with the extension, so it had a tizzy fit with the interest/penalty. Fortunately the problems appear to be very obvious and straight forward -- nothing a little whiteout can't fix. In general, I find the state forms a lot more difficult. When I work on the state form, it would be nice to be able to save the personal state info (e.g. am I a quadriplegic?), and just jump to the main section if I want to go back and work on it.

Good product, as usual, but 2015 has large flaw

Overall, a great product that leads non-experts through step by step. Quite good at keeping up with the yearly moving of the goalposts by the IRS. But this year there was a change in reporting form K-1 for California and TurboTax did not show you the right boxes to draw the information from. They asked you to input numbers from the "Alternative Minimum Tax Adjustment" section of the K-1 but there were several numbers(boxes) available and no clear indication as to which was the correct one to input. This is a particularly arcane section and the headings made no sense to the average user, so much more specific directions from TurboTax were required but not provided. I can only hope that they rework this for next year as it is a big failing in an otherwise good product.
What's great about it: Great guidance with yearly updates
What's not so great: 2015 yearly update was not executed well.

Been using TurboTax for years and will continue to do so. Always easy to use both going forward, and going back to edit or fill in information as it comes in. Makes completing taxes almost fun... Highly recommend.
What's great about it: Fast easy to use and reliable!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Oil and Gas royalties
on October 1, 2016

We're not oil people...we inherited Texas land that had mineral rights and now they've found oil on the old place. It was hard to figure out how to deduct the property tax and get the depletion allowance.
What's great about it: Glad it's included
What's not so great: Hard to find how to do deductions for oil/gas royalties
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Wash Sale issues addressed
on October 2, 2016

Just AVOID WASH SALES, folks - wait 31 days before ever rebuying stock you sale if it will be repurchased at a lower price than you sold it. It will saves LOTS of headaches. TurboTaxes "search" field did not work at times for me - would not respond...I spent a lot of time looking to find where to change stock wash sale info and HOW to show I wanted to apply my refund to next year. BUT, TurboTax has always saved time --- this year seemed a bit harder to navigate. But I certainly recommend it.
What's great about it: Overall the program saves a LOT of time
What's not so great: It was hard to change a wash sale issue when an imported 1099 had an error the stockbroker would NOT correct
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax is great but can still be improved
on October 2, 2016

I have been using Turbo Tax from the day it was introduced to the market. It is a great product but needs improvement. 1. When filing Head of Household and not claiming the child. The program struggles on this scenario. I used to be a part-time tax preparer so I know how to by-pass the logic built-in and modify the parameters by going on each form. Program should be improved on this. 2. People who are actively trading is in a disadvantage on this. The limitation on the size of the upload transaction should be improved. Also, TurboTax should work with traders accounting software such as TradeLog and GainsKeeper to make it easier to upload the transactions generated by those softwares. There are ways and hacks but it would serve better the TurboTax community if this is in placed.
I will still use the product and will keep recommending it to friends.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Program is not flexible on Head of Household and not claiming child.
