Late submission
on October 19, 2016

So, I get to the end of my return pushing the deadline time limit. I review it and it all looks good and think I have it submitted. Then I opt for the audit protection because it gives me a warm fuzzy. What I didn't realize was that the program doesn't actually submit the return before you go off to buy another product. I filled out and paid for the protection and was pulled away from the actual submission of my return. If there was any kind of warning the return had not been submitted and that I needed to return to the program I never saw it. Two days later I go back in to shut down active programs on my desktop and TT won't shut down because it has an active window. I never submitted my return and now it is late. No idea what the repercussions will be, guess we will find out. Sell me what I ask for, but file my return first! Wonder if that Audit protection will cover me for that late submission?

I could not choose itemized deductions after I completed return; you have to use standard deduction.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Choice for deductions-only standard

Been using Turbo Tax for many years. Love it! It does all the calculations for rented property and also for contract business. The "pop up" answers to questions are great and explain in common lenguage
What's great about it: Easy to use, walk through each item with questions easily answered
What's not so great: finding forms to review entries

More difficult than IRS worksheets.
on January 27, 2016

I've never not used turbotax. It got worse last year and I was on the fence, this year is my last. It didn't talk me through tax situations, it asked questions and if it didn't get the answer it wanted it wouldn't proceed. No info as to what the error is or what sort of next steps I would need to take, just a repetitive question about a missing adjustment code. Everything I've read online and from TurboTax's website, even after manually completing the IRS's worksheet, says that I don't need the code. But TurboTax won't let me submit. Anywho, I won't be buying again, I'd recommend shopping around yourself as well.
What's great about it: Claims to be easy. Cheaper than a tax professional.
What's not so great: Not easy, smart check is bad. Won't let me submit return
Pros: I bought or sold investments, I had a baby, I moved

Estimated Tax Penalty
on February 5, 2016

I have a monthly pension and withholding. Also have interest income . My monthly withholding more than covers the related tax on the interest and I still get an estimated tax penalty. NO reason for it. That is reason for having extra withholding. My refund is over $800 and I get a $49 estimated tax penalty. Please fix your software.
What's not so great: Errors in software

Turbo Tax is easy to understand and use. The questions are comprehensive and leads the user to credits which may not be readily thought of. My favorite feature is the audit risk assessment once the return is completed.
What's great about it: Easy to understand
What's not so great: Lots of forms

Turbo Tax is going down hill...

I am very disappointed that Turbo Tax continues to charge so much money & continues to get less functional & less user friendly. This software already made filers purchase more content by taking that content from the deluxe version. Now you have made a bunch of annoying and repetitively aggravating questions all throughout the software. Why do we need to answer the same questions twice? I have used Turbo Tax for about 20 yrs. I liked being able to type directly into a form. Why shouldn't I still be able to do that? Trying to change or update dependent data is also a pain to manage. It used to be simple and easy & you also change the amount to drop so that you are required to go through all the questions again, even when it's just a name correction. Why fix what isn't broken? Why make changes that make your software more difficult to use? It's so slow that when you click on an option nothing happens & you think maybe I need to click it again, then you do but it still takes more time before it responds so you wait cause you know for sure you clicked it that time & then it finally moves on. & last but not least I have to mention how all Turbo Tax users put up with the annoying, do you want to upgrade, buy tax representative assistance & whatever else you choose to throw in to ask for more money. If you must have it in the software make it smart so that it remembers your answer & doesn't repeat every time you have to revisit a section. So, once again the repetitive stuff is annoying. We know you want our money, your software is pricey, but do we have to constantly be asked about adding or upgrading services, or deal with an costly software asking for more money over & over? I say NO! After using this years version of Turbo Tax, I am seriously considering trying another tax software. Sad & disappointed.
What's great about it: Same look
What's not so great: Slow, repetitive in areas, can't type into forms, less user-friendly, degraded functionality, High Cost

This is a great product that I have used for 15 years. I have never had a question or an audit from the IRS and my refunds have been timely.
What's great about it: ease of use, question approach
What's not so great: none
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
