I sold one of my Vacation Rental By Owner properties and was expecting Turbo Tax Premier to be more user friendly by either carrying over information to appropriate forms or by giving better instructions as to where and/or how to determine or find information I had to manually enter. Completing my taxes this year was not as easy, as in years passed, when a sale of property was not an issue. I am not 100% comfortable that my entries are accurate but the Turbo Tax review system did not report any errors to me. So, I am sending as is and hoping for the best.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Constantly Annoying Software
on February 13, 2016

TurboTax Premier and Deluxe are constantly annoying, because they will not allow a person familiar with a personal income tax return to fill in Form 1040 and Schedules A-E directly, or even to fill in a single worksheet connected with each category of income or expense. For example, cash charitable contributions cannot be entered directly onto Schedule A, or even directly onto the Contributions Worksheet, but must be entered onto a second-level worksheet that is difficult to find. Nor is there any link from the place one wants to enter on the form to the worksheet--though TurboTax business has such a link in the form of a magnifying glass. If you abandon the "forms" approach for the "step-by-step" approach, you have to have your intelligence insulted by an idiot's approach with so many screens that you wonder if it will ever end.

Wish I used it in 2014

I knew I had to pay this year so why give away more to a CPA. It was the same situation last year but used another tax software product. I realized this year that I missed something during the process that TurboTax would have walked me through for the 2014 taxes. I'm converted.
What's great about it: Step by step instructions
What's not so great: Long but not too bad & cheaper than a CPA

software bugs - premier edition

1) an infinite loop in the 1099-misc questions 2)Turbo-tax created a schedule c when we don't have a small business because we had a 1099-misc - the only work around was to manually delete the schedule c 3)added a farm rental 1099-misc (a different 1099-misc from the one in item 2) when I was prompted for 1099's under income then under farms it forced me to enter the information again. After this it showed 2 farms and showed 2 identical 1099-misc for the farm. I manually deleted one of these but was still showing 2 farms. After deleting all forms relevant to the farm (schedule e and and 8582s), I started over, did not add the 1099-misc under the income area and only added it when prompted for the farm and it worked OK. 4) tried a second time to delete schedule e and 8582s (this was the next day) and I could not delete the forms. After 5 or so tries they were still there. 5)not a software bug but a great annoyance -when having the problem referenced in item 3) I could not edit the 8582 worksheet 3 to easily correct the 2 farm problem there 6)the state form would not always remember the amount that I had entered for the Use Tax. Yes I had saved. Sometimes the next day that information would not be there - but other days it would be.
Great frustrations for a first time Turbo Tax user

Good product--rarely, if ever, do I have a question that the program can't answer!
What's great about it: Simply follow the instructions--it's easy
What's not so great: Once I finish a subsection and click "DONE" it takes me back to the beginning of the section--boo

Helps SO much!

Turbotax walks you through each topic to see if it may apply to you, keeping you from missing out on something because you forgot to enter it. The helps are fantastic as they describe what falls into what category. The difficult part is tallying up your receipts, expenses, etc., but once you've done your part, enter the numbers and let TurboTax do the rest! LOVE IT! Use it year after year!
