Worked Like A Charm!
on August 30, 2016

I've used TurboTax for years. I've never even considered changing programs.
What's great about it: easy to use, intuitive
What's not so great: if you return to a screen it asks the same multiple questions again.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TurboTax Again
on September 1, 2016

I've been using TurboTax since the days of amber screens. I think my first time was in 1988. I've flirted with other programs, but have always come back to TT. I don't want to be without it.
What's great about it: Transfers data from my investment portfolio
What's not so great: Can't think of one
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Growing tax law complexities may overwhelm TurboTx
on September 1, 2016

TurboTax and similar software are great if you are doing a simple tax return (i.e. taking the standard deduction) and have no business expenses. Its also great if you already know tax law well enough and recently enough to file by taxes via paper.
However, this year it took me longer to use TurboTax than I did previously via paper only a couple years ago due to growing complexities of tax code. These complexities and subtle differences are very hard to accurately handle via a query program like TurboTax. Thus, users still need to read the IRS rules to understand the right answers to provide TurboTax.
Some instructions in TT are simply contrary to what the IRS says in its documents, including for such frequently encountered issues such as reporting job search expenses.
State tax rules are particularly troublesome to keep accurate. TurboTax thinks IL taxes can be filed electronically in circumstances where IL says additional documents must be included via mail for deductions such as U.S. Gov't interest/dividends.
Most importantly, on going corrections to TurboTax and similar packages well after April 15th mean that I for one never file my return until later in the year when TurboTax has completed the majority of its corrections. This is not because TT is not diligent, but rather that tax code changes have become too complex to complete accurately by April 15th. Users can see this by logging into TT and seeing the updates TT downloads each time. Click on the plus sign to read a description of the changes.
I wish TurboTax and others luck so that we don't all have to hire tax attorneys, but in the end the U.S. needs a simpler tax code. I, with an MBA in Finance from a top five business school, should not need tax software to file my tax return.
p.s. Full implementation of the Health Care act's penalties will soon make filing much worse for many people.
What's great about it: Software like TurboTax eliminate math errors that have become all too easy to make given ever more complex wkshts
What's not so great: Tax law is become too complex for simply query programs like TurboTax
Pros: I bought or sold investments, My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Bummer

Great experience

After we retired, my husband did our tax returns. When we found out he was terminally ill, he did everything he could to prepare me for being alone and had me do our tax returns before he passed. After he passed away, I was anxious about filling out the forms for 2015 because I wouldn't have him to back me up.. Friends told me about Turbo Tax and highly recommended it so I gave it a try. It was so easy!
What's great about it: Easy to use, clear explanations, step by step help
What's not so great: Can't think of any.
