I just completed our most complex tax return. TurboTax not only helped me through it with the effective and efficient software details, but the additional available reference materials and references to IRS information was invaluable.
What's great about it: Great hints, tips, and online reference material
Pros: I bought or sold investments, My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Turbo Tax makes the confusing job of getting tax information ready for the IRS much easier and more appealing. It is very organized but not excessively so.
Pros: I bought or sold investments, My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Exceptional Mac Product Except ...

My wife and I have used Quicken, Turbotax, and ItsDeductible for what seems like forever but is at least 10 years. At first on a heterogeneous mix of hardware, now more recently moving toward an all Mac home since retirement.
During this time TurboTax has become better and better integrated with importing data from Quicken, ItsDeductible and a large number of popular financial institutions. Over time our return has become more complex with a new home and associated refinancings, various inherited and purchased investments, a business partnership between my wife and me, and of course all the financial rearrangements one might expect of a family moving into their retirement years. Along the way TurboTax handled even the most esoteric situations easily. For example, is it better to take a foreign tax expense from within a partnership as a credit or deduction. Another case, how does one treat a regular IRA when inherited is moved into a Roth IRA. Easy for TurboTax!
I would have given TurboTax 5 stars but for the extremely frustrating situation we have now twice experienced when transmitting our returns. Both times we have received arcane and unhelpful instructions concluding with "try again later"... kinda' reminds you of the Magic 8 Ball, always wondered where that guy went to work after that. I am frustrated in that I am filing after having filed an extension (we don't get health care or certain other investment information needed to file until much later than April 15th) so I cannot believe these bugs are just now showing up! And for a Mac product I feel let down. Ask yourself, what would Apple do. Apple is one of only two companies I have had the pleasure of working with who has never let a problem of mine go unresolved from point of first contact!
What's great about it: Integrates well with Quicken and ItsDeductible
What's not so great: Error messages are less than helpful!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I had to pick up on this tax return filing after my husband became unable to do it. Quite a chore for one who has never done this before.. Good help available but would like a better contact source.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to use, walks one through step by step
What's not so great: Need better access to help for novices.

bugs in the software

I feel like intuit should concentrate less on the flashy characters and the splash screens and more on the content there were 3 bugs i had when doing my taxes and I basically had to print them out and white out the differences.
What's great about it: easy to fill out
What's not so great: There are bugs when porting from federal to CA state
Pros: I had a baby, I bought or sold investments, I moved

A Life Saver

It got a little more "folksy" this year over prior years which I didn't care for. But then I'm a CPA and take these sorts of things more seriously than most probably. This really is a great product and basically required to do income taxes anymore. I used to do manually up until a few years ago and got to be too much with all the deduction phase-outs and sub-calculations.
What's great about it: Very Intuitive Easy to use Love step by step process and carry overs from prior year
What's not so great: A little disjointed and sometimes hard to follow what are next steps.
