Be careful with Form 1095-A (Health Insurance)
on August 15, 2016

It's very easy to deduct your health insurance premiums twice...once automatically from the 1095-A, and once the old fashioned way on the Health Insurance Premiums interview question. There's no cross-checking, and it doesn't warn you that it already has the information. It just deducts it twice.
What's great about it: It adds the entries from the 1095-A to your deductions automatically
What's not so great: It adds the entries from the 1095-A to your deductions automatically
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Qualified Tuition Plans

The handling of educational costs and payments from QTPs like "529" accounts should be brought together in one section and the handling of 529 payouts that go to the account owner to reimburse qualified payments made on behalf of the beneficiary should be made simpler. This latter process is common and TT should handle it better. Also, TT messages that educational deductions will not be allowed due to higher income are not applicable to QTPs but they show up and are confusing. In general, the whole area of educational costs, payments, deductions and credits should be cleaned up and made more coherent. This is a weak spot in TT.
What's great about it: Not much to like about this
What's not so great: Confusing and Disjointed Approach for Handling Some 529 Account Payouts

Two Issues, otherwise good

Eventually, I was able to edit the forms to claim my father as a dependent, as I provided more than 50% of his income. However, the TT question about his income exceeding $4K was misleading. The question should be "Did this person receive income _other_than_Social_Security_ exceeding $4000?"
Secondly, the cost basis of the sale of my second home was too complicated for TT. My first wife and I purchased it in 1990, and she died in 2003. Thus, I inherited 50% of the appraised value in 2003. My second wife and I sold it in 2015. Therefore, my cost basis was 50% of the price in 1990 plus 50% of the appraised value in 2003. I had to enter the purchase date as 2003 and enter the total cost basis.
Otherwise, TT is great, and I will keep using it.
What's great about it: Everything but 2 items
What's not so great: Claiming elder dependent, cost basis of property sale didn't work
Pros: I bought or sold investments

In retrospect, I wish I had called for help earlier instead of struggling on my own for so long. My problems, in reality, were much simpler than I realized.
What's great about it: Very helpful during threee telephone calls for help.
What's not so great: None

TurboTax is so thorough and provides tips and additional info. It's "dumbed down" enough so the average person can understand. I've been using TurboTax for at least 5 years. Highly recommended!
What's great about it: Everything!
What's not so great: My only enhancement request is to allow re-importing your previous year's return (after filing adjustment).
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Forced to answer same questions again again again

1-Turbo Tax requires answering some questions over and over again when going back to review items. 100% unnecessary and waste of time
2-Some items are very unclear as to what is needed for input. If the IRS code must be dug up for reference, then Turbo Tax is useless
What's great about it: Previous yr data imports
What's not so great: when going back to review, must answer same questions over and over everytime
