Foreign Tax credit and Schedule K-1
on April 19, 2016
Posted by: Joetax1
Schedule K-1 foreign tax credit asks if foreign tax was accrued (but no option for paid). So when I selected accrued, since no option for "paid", then TT doubled the foreign tax credit. Please add a tip sheet (hotlink) to tell mutual fund holders they cannot select both paid and accrued. e.g. 1099-DIV box 6 is labeled as foreign tax paid, and they should not select accrued for a simple mutual fund situation (passive income). Or add a tip sheet (hot link with a clear explanation if TT has no option to say either accrued or paid for Mutual Funds,
What's great about it: schedule K-1 reports foreign tax paid and easy to enter
What's not so great: Schedule K-1 foreign tax credit asks if foreign tax was accrued (but no option for paid)

Mixed Bag

Overall, I like using the program and find most of its coverage easy to navigate and understand. However, there seem to be a number of overlapping sections that deal with business expenses and when "Other" Income can entered in the various sections, where 1099-MISC income may be reported, as well as the amount of business expense that is deductible under the various income tax areas. I found it a bit frustrating and confusing.
What's great about it: Comprehensive coverage of virtually all subjects. Fairly easy to navigate through.
What's not so great: Confusing information about Self-Employment, 1099-MISC, and business expenses

Some confusion
on April 19, 2016
Posted by: SweetiePie57
At the end, when the print option comes up, you click on the print icon and you open a window with choices of what you want to print. All forms, return only, etc., then you can print to a pdf file or print review. Choose print review and you can see all forms that will print out. Could avoid some confusion if once you do review you could print out return. Then offer all options for saving return.
What's great about it: Easy interview process
What's not so great: Printing and efiling options a little confusing

tired of annoyances
on April 19, 2016

In the past year my husband and I bought a new home and our son bought a condo. In both cases we were getting mortgages. I was horrified that I couldn't print two years of taxes off my computer. Thankfully I am old school and keep paper copies. When you go to open an old tax return (more than current tax year old) TT says there is a new version of TT and you watch your prior tax return disappear. I've never filed an amended return, but I'm wondering how I would do that if I found some tax document from 2014!?
Another annoyance is that I don't believe you can alphabetize your entries in a section. We have stock in over 40 companies. Some times they change, sometimes they get sold, sometimes they don't give dividends. What good is all of that history if it is no longer in alphabetical order because of changes over the years. What is worse is charitable contributions, because in that case it is over two hundred organizations. As the list of organizations we donate to has changed over the years that too has fallen out of order. That is a Real challenge to go through. Worse yet, as you scroll through, if you edit an item, when you flash back to the list they start you at the top again. I probably spend an additional 8-10 hours on my taxes because of these two sections not being in alphabetical order.
What's great about it: I stick with TT because they have my history and I know their program well by now
What's not so great: old returns disappear after the new version of TT is out. can't alphabetize entries in dividends or charitable contrib.
Pros: I moved

on April 19, 2016

Fifth year using the software, this time through a different computer. Even after imaging old drive into new computer it did not find previous year.
Other than that it is a very good tool to file taxes.
What's great about it: Organized
What's not so great: Not finding previous year info
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

2015 TurboTax Premier
on April 19, 2016

TurboTax Premier is an excellent product. I have recommended it many friends and relatives. I know of several who have taken my advice and now they too like TurboTax
What's great about it: Auto-transfer of last year's data; step-by-step approach, especially if it's an area the taxpayer is unfamiliar with.
What's not so great: At the Premier price, e-fling state return should be at no charge.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Review the TURBO

Great product. Have used it for several years. Extremely well priced.
What's great about it: Excellent step by step. As retired accountant, I wish this would of been available 40 years ago.
What's not so great: A little slow on loading and running. Might be my computer.
