Turbo Tax makes filing your taxes doable because it walks you through the process and provides helpful examples.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax is user friendly.
What's not so great: Lengthy but this isn't Turbo Tax fault.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Could always use improvement

I would like to see the tool be able to review the answers I have entered without having to answer them again. If I click on something it should be there when I go back to it.
What's great about it: somewhat intuitive to use
What's not so great: Better forms management and selection save

2015 tax process review
on April 18, 2016

tax process seems knowledgable but simple processing of payments etc puts this very challenging process into potential failure every year. If that gets corrected then people could really be more about telling friends of the great experience instead of the extreme drama encountered. Please fix this.
Thanks
What's great about it: guided processing
What's not so great: after process the system never just takes your credit card or payment info
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Thoughts on Pension income reported via 1099-R
on April 18, 2016

Many tax payers still receive income from pensions in retirement that is reported on Form 1099-R. TurboTax treats this income as it would an IRA, including questions and requirements for information about RMD's (Required Minimum Distribution,) which can be confusing to older tax payers who only know that they receive a monthly pension payment as income.
I prepare taxes for my 75 year old Mother and she receives a pension inherited from my Father (deceased.) As my Father would have been in excess of 70 1/2 years old if he had lived, the questions surrounding RMD's, including the % of RMD represented by this income, came up. Additionally, the program gives the user an option for being a survivor recipient of the pension, which is for a specific individual US Government pension that is not relevant to the category of thousands of standard private and other public pensions.
In conclusion, it is perfectly correct to include pension income in with the other 1099-R types of income. However, it would probably be helpful to make the language more clear so as to acknowledge specifically that many tax payers receive pensions that are reported just like IRA's with the same RMD requirements (and that they must check the same box.) Then the software application could offer an explanation and/or several choices to assist in answering the applicability of RMD and % of RMD appropriate. Thank you.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Needs improvement

I had a couple of state-specific issues that made filing my return very painful. Wife works in MA and from home in NH, and we both live in NH. The only way to apportion income is by using the tax forms; it cannot be done using "step by step". Customer service rep was awesome in explaining how to use the forms. But, it got a lot worse when I filed jointly for the federal return, and then tried to file separate for my wife in MA. TurboTax makes you create "mock" returns, and I had to do my taxes all over again for myself and my wife. It was such a nightmare that I gave up. I think that the software should automatically allow you to file a separate state return for one spouse.
What's great about it: Step by step works 80% of the time
What's not so great: Filing jointly for federal, separate for state is a disaster
