Taxes suck... but a bit less so with Turbotax
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: Dom5150
Let's not lie. Doing taxes sucks. You can count on wasting at least a couple hours or a whole day of your precious life.
But that said, TurboTax rocks. It takes that horrible required waste of your life and makes it not so bad. You can kick back, grab a beer, and get it done accurately all by yourself, cost-effectively.
Only pain is gathering the information. If you're missing something, well then it's a real pain. But no way around that, even with a CPA. Also if you sell any investments make sure your broker is tracking your cost basis. Otherwise you're in for a lot more side work in Excel calculating it yourself, which will likely take longer than everything else.
Turbotax itself was great. Easy walk through, great menus, easy e-filing, and nice forms for my records.
What's great about it: Easy walk through, great menus when you already know where to go, and very clean final forms.
What's not so great: Didn't directly say I needed to mail form 1098-C for car donation, although it did check the box on form 8453
Pros: I bought or sold investments, I had a baby

Improved program, but some issues
on April 18, 2016

Nice if there were help buttons for each entry
What's great about it: Handles most issues smoothly
What's not so great: Says I should open an IRA when I'm not eligible; can't review taxes without threat of messing them up.

Override then can't efile
on April 18, 2016

I have a situation: my spouse changed from her ITIN to SSN. The first time home buyer credit repayment amount were actually devided equally by TT. But actually in IRS system, my credit balance is different from my spouse's. It maybe a bug of IRS system(maybe someone changed the balance manually because my spouse ITIN changed to SSN). So efile was rejected by IRS system; Then I tried to override the amount in my 5405(the total amount is same: 5000 -- just move part of my balance to my spouse's to match it in IRS system). But this time, the efile was rejected by TT because of overriding..
Have to mail the return... In this case, a big part of TT pros has gone...
What's great about it: Process most cases easily
What's not so great: Can't email with some CORRECT override
Pros: I moved

Final Review

The product should be seamless across versions. It appears that certain items are not characterized correctly. (1099-Misc)
What's great about it: Questions and step by step approach
What's not so great: The stupid announcement while waiting for the program to load. If you know it is taking longer than a moment, fix it.

Getting better each year
on April 18, 2016

The foreign tax credit input area needs work. I went round and round trying to get my entries entered. I have two investment 1099s and the system would not present both each time I tried to enter a new credit.
What's great about it: E-file worked very well!
What's not so great: Difficult to get form 1116 entries into the program
Pros: I bought or sold investments

PrePared My 2015 TurboTax Filing Three Times
on April 18, 2016
Posted by: JJoe1
I find TurboTax a good tax tool but it still has some limitations that could easily be fixed. Two simple ones that resulted in time consuming redo's this year are partially linked. When the new year tax file is created, it looks for last year’s turbo file if it exists. You get to guess which file to pick if there is more than one. The total file name does not appear for review. This year the 2015 turbo tax found the wrong 2014 tax data twice. I did not catch it the first time. It would not be that big of a deal but once the data is loaded, the new year file will not go back and import a new file into the in work tax filing to replace the bad data. You have to start from scratch. Part of the issue is that the window that brings up available data/files, does not automatically bring up the whole file name or let you readily browse it. PARTIAL FIX for both noted issues, Make the window that opens the files see more data or allow browse with full file name recognition, I use final in my Final files but it does not appear unless I rename the file at the beginning. Should not matter, the whole name should be accessible. Further, allowing a re-import of some previous years returns, or other data for that matter, would have saved me two days’ worth of work and seems to be a logical thing verses rewriting/typing all the data back in. I see via questions others have had the same and similar problems. I am not sure where data was being pulled this year but it was wrong and I had to redo the whole tax filing after spending two days working it.
What's great about it: System Seems to Collected Data well and Ask good questions
What's not so great: Make a mistake and you can start over, and over and over
