ISSUE with 1099B Entry
on April 15, 2016
Posted by: CactusQueen
This is my 6th year of using TurboTax - it seems every year our taxes have gotten more complicated, but Turbo Tax helps me breeze through it. (One exception this year - there seems to be an issue when preparing the forms for a 1099B for Restricted Stock Awards - when the stock is sold at a loss after the initial vesting date. The form wants to put the loss as an expense of the sale, when it really isn't a true expense - it's a LOSS. The only way I could get the proper amount to show on the form 8949 and Schedule D was to put the loss in as an expense. AND I had to go back through the entry- delete what I had initially entered, even though it was correct, and re-enter the info from the 1099B.)
A bit of a pain this year, but I will still use Turbo Tax next year!
What's great about it: Still easy to use, even with investments and AMT
What's not so great: had an issue with forms for 1099B for RSA

Locked in....lacks all forms
on April 15, 2016

Hard to change to another tax prep program, feel locked in to turbo tax, yet so many forms I need they don't even list when entering the form number in their search box. Also forms and information for filing when having a savings account in another country, should be part of the step by step process.
Overrides should not prohibit one from e filing. sometimes an error on carry over needs to be corrected or there are other situations where the correct number should be manually entered (not always easy to find where turbo tax has the initial number).
What's great about it: calculations done for me
What's not so great: does not even list many of the forms when searching to let me know they don't include them
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I have used Turbo Tax for many years. It is easy to follow the instructions and I have never been audited. I have recommended the program to many people. I will continue to use the program as long as I am able.

Long time user - since the 90's last century
on April 15, 2016

I started to use this program in the 90's of the past century. It was then written by a different company in Cedar Rapids, IA.
This is the ONLY way to do your taxes. After that many years I SHOULD know. If your not using it or if your spending your money to have an attorney do it for you then your wasting your money. I had an attorney do mine before and I had to give them all of the information. If I have to supply all of the info then why not just type it in the computer and do my own. I'm very, very pleased with Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: It does the job without much effort
What's not so great: Don't like to give my money away
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Vagaries of TurboTax
on April 15, 2016
Posted by: jjefferies
A major issue for me is that TT doesn't pick up on certain clues such as if you have stocks and bonds you probably have a financial advisor whose charges are deductible. This was missed in previous years and I'll have to see if I can retroactively get a refund.
What's great about it: The program does do step by step fairly well.
What's not so great: Problem is that it does not pick up on certain clues to ask further questions.

I always start TurboTax with a little trepidation, but once I get into it, the program allieves my fears. Now after 15+ years of using the program, I have total confidence in it. THANKS!
What's great about it: straight forward guided tour through all important sections
What's not so great: sometimes I have questions that are not answered fully
Pros: I moved
