Turbo Tax 2016
on April 15, 2016

I have used it for years. It is the best out there. But the added cost for filing and support add up quickly. For people I deal and work with that is the deal breaker even though they would like to use it!
What's great about it: Great product and easy to understand and gives confidence in accuracy. Also provided good support for proble
What's not so great: It is expensive

Successful Filing
on April 15, 2016

My taxes filing got a bit complicated but I expected no less since I deal with foreign stocks, foreign taxes, Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs), Capital Gains and (unfortunately) Losses. I probably saved $300+ from cost of having a tax professional prepare the return.
What's great about it: Step by step process
What's not so great: None really, after all it is taxes.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Was good

Overall great experience! There were a couple things I wanted more clarification with such as something about applying 2014's tax return to this year. But I just hit "no" and no problems.
The biggest thing I wish were different is that although I like the friendly attitude of the software and the filler screens (in moderation) I wish I knew easily which screens were filler. Screens like "Okay you're doing great. Now were going to work on __" or "We're going to try to get you as much money as possible." They're a good idea to break up the pace but I wish the background were a different color or the continue buttons on those screens looked different so I would know that if I'm in a hurry I can just skip past those screens.
What's great about it: Friendly and fast
What's not so great: Filler screens I want to skip past

Re: The 2015 TurboTax Premier pkg.

My main problem with doing taxes is getting all of my paperwork together. That done, I started TurboTax. I was able to use the easy to understand directions with ease. When I had a questions about something, the links brought up little boxes that had good information.
Taxes are difficult enough that their is no way I could do them on my own. Using an easy to understand tax prep. program like TurboTax was a must.. Yea Turbotax!
What's great about it: I liked the ease of use of their format
What's not so great: I actually don't have any gripes on it at the time

great product

I have used TurboTax for many years now. Each year the updates precisely get me through my personal and nuanced situations. My returns are accurate and I usually get a refund. This year, I paid extra but it was because of a unique taxable event that is non repeatable. TurboTax walked me through this so that my return would be proper. Thanks.
What's great about it: Walk through is great. Has all the forms, even for special situations.

Downhill from Past Years
on April 15, 2016

It was very slow to load. Had trouble saving a couple of times. It crashed a couple of times. Using Windows 10 on a newer PC.
Also the explanation on the drivers license was very poor and it crashed when submitting.
Never had problems in past years. Disappointed.
Also CA tax is always a bit marginal. I blame CA not Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Pulls up past years very well
What's not so great: Slow to Load and Crashed Several Times

Turbo Tax pros and cons
on April 15, 2016

I have been using Turbo Tax for many hears, at least 10. This year I had difficulty entering university details for our son who attended McGill Univ. in Montreal. McGill University is an accredited university with U.S., ie The U.S. goverment grants loans to U.S. students who attend there. However, McGill does not use the same 1098-T form the American colleges use. McGill sends a T2202A certificate to validate education tuition and education fees. The certificate is a different format than a 1098-T form, hence difficult to enter in Turbo tax Also Turbo tax software requests a filer's Federal ID no of the school, which is not available on T2202A. There is also the exchange rate to consider. . . .
What's great about it: Turbo Tax walked me through the tax reporting process thoroughly
What's not so great: miner details
