Improved Foreign Tax Credit
on April 15, 2016
Posted by: RogerJB
The software was much better than in past years at handling my foreign tax credit. This is the first time I haven't had to go in and play with the tax forms directly. Overall an improvement over past years except for mail filing the state return.
What's great about it: The software was much better than in past years at handling my foreign tax credit.
What's not so great: Avoiding the state e-flie seemed more complicated than previous years.

Everything about TurboTax just works. It can even calculate NC Bailey Settlement exemptions. I've used TurboTax for as long as I can remember and it has never failed me.
What's great about it: Everything works

EASIER ACCESS TO ACTUAL RETURN
on April 15, 2016

IT WOULD BE MOST USEFUL AND UNDERSTANDABLE IF THE ACTUAL TAX RETURN WAS ACCESSIBLE WITH A CLICK SO I COULD VIEW IT AS THE DATA IS BEING ENTERED. IF A PIECE OF DATA RESULTS IN A NEW FORM BEING ADDED TO THE RETURN I COULD SEE IN REAL TIME THE EFFECT THAT IT CAUSED. IT WOULD HELP ME FIND MISTAKES THAT I MADE IN ENTERING DATA AND HELP TO PROMPT ME TO NOTICE OMISSIONS.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Good, but

The step by step is good. It seems to cover all topics well. But if you have a question, it sends you to the community forum, and I hate those. Hard to find a direct answer. Also, it's annoying that it can't pull up older data if you skip a year of TT. We used an accountant one year, and it needed everything put in manually, even though my older files were available. They force you to get it every year this way. Not consumer friendly.
What's great about it: User friendly and complete.
What's not so great: Still some annoyances with questions and history

Software did not do a good job with Schedule K income. It did not flow through to other states well. No way to import charitable deductions unless you use its deductable
What's great about it: step by step guide
What's not so great: poor handling of schedule k, cant import from spreadsheet

Legacy User of Turbo Tax
on April 15, 2016

The product is improved each year, but still has flaws and gaps. I find it frustrating that there is limited help when there is a question. The community group is a nice concept, but when you really need to know how some function works or where or why a form is missing, it would be valuable to have a real time person to chat with --- Turbo Tax misses this.
Was also a bit surprised that for the first time I was charged for having a second state tax filing. It was very expensive to do for a very small dollar amount. Is this new or have I just been lucky that I have not been charged in the past.?
What's great about it: It is great to have a historic track record of my filings and tax data. Having it all in one place is very helpful.
What's not so great: The software is still not robust enough - lots of tax questions not covered. PDF process lost my tax data. Ouch!
