Perfect guide for Investment Income
on April 14, 2016

Direct transfer from financial institutions of the many stock transactions of a very active investment portfolio is indispensable for quick and accurate reporting data for schedule D and form 8949. It is a must for me for many years of my retirement (19). Integrating Social Security, Pensions and investment Income is perfect and I absolutely rely on the program to keep me honest. This year I also sold a house and Turbo Tax guided me through the reporting process. I had no experience of having it done before. The only Con I have is that after I made the payment to E-file my State Taxes the program informed me that my return was not eligible for E-filing and that paper filing was the only option. The options should be determined before payment is made. Otherwise I have no other cons. Thank you again for a very good program.
What's great about it: Direct transfer from finacial institutions of the many stock transactions.
What's not so great: Late confirmation of State E-file option
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Makes it as easy as possible

TurboTax makes it as easy as possible to file. LOVE that it will import from previous year (even after migrating to a new computer) and will import from financial institutions. Only complaint was that it imported a K-1 from last year that didn't exist this year (maybe I screwed up and didn't tell TT to delete it, to be fair).
What's great about it: Import from last year; step-by-step; import from financial firms
What's not so great: imported TOO MUCH from last year

Almost perfect

Overall, Fantastic.
Still handles PTPs, K-1, and disposition very poorly. Hosed my K-1 entry and missed final disposition on first pass. I e-Filed before I realized that I had to hand edit the forms again. TT just ignored it. I'm not sending in an amended return to get the extra $11. I just modified and saved so that next year TT will show the LP closed in 2015. I will try extra hard to not purchase PTP in the future. Really wish TT would try extra hard to handle this increasingly common security type.
What's great about it: Even knew about backdoor Roth
What's not so great: Still poor support for PTP/LP/K-1
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Error Loop

I've been an avid user of Turbo Tax for more than 25 years. I have been a virtual Evangelist for how great the product is (was). Now, a bug in the 2015 Premier version was a total let-down.
A flaw in the code prevents getting a NYC tax credit; it can be corrected by over-riding the default zero value; HOWEVER, TurboTax blocks eFiling of returns with over-rides, AND New York REQUIRES tax returns that are prepared electronically to be eFiled. The ONLY work-around is to eFile without the credit, then try to Amend it later, if that is possible. Inexplicably, this bug has been listed on TurboTax forums for more than SIX MONTHS.
For an automatic credit that is afforded to NYC residents, this is a COMPLETE FAIL by the TurboTax Engineering Team, and their management. Given their stellar history, I expect more attention to detail.
NOTE: I still gave TurboTax a "GOOD" rating, because the Federal Return worked EXCELLENTLY!
What's great about it: Great Experiences for past 25 years
What's not so great: Ultimate Let-Down in 2015

Vehicles used in business (rental property) may be the same vehicle for all such properties. Also, when a vehicle is crash totaled, it isn't clear how to report it.
What's great about it: Good readability
What's not so great: Awkward when a vehicle used in business is totaled & replaced
Pros: I bought or sold investments
