Another successful year
on April 13, 2016
Posted by: Canebraker
All the forms were easy to use and since I've used TurboTax for several years, information was already filled out. I moved this year and had many, many donations to Goodwill, etc. Using established values was a great help. I'll continue to use TurboTax in the future.
What's great about it: Comparison of previous year to the current year
What's not so great: Had some trouble filing state tax

Overrides prevent e-filing & problems with 2 state
on April 13, 2016

For the past 20 years I've used TurboTax. This may be my last. I moved during the past year and had to file two state tax forms. I doing so I had to override several items, including from 1116. What I discovered is that if there is any overridden item, efiling is prevented by the software. I already paid for this service and I expect that what you say Intuit will deliver it will actually deliver. There also seems to be a problem with two state filing when I'm a part-year resident in both. That also caused the need to override several items. I'm surprised at finding these problems but unless they're fixed, I'll be using a different tax prep program next year.
What's great about it: Easy data entry
What's not so great: Can't efile when I have to use an override
Pros: I moved

Turbo Tax Makes Doing My Taxes Fun!
on April 13, 2016

I love doing my taxes with Turbo Tax and each year I learn more ways to make it easier. I'm interested in understanding how the numbers work.
Some suggestions for lowering the frustration levels: There seem to be several "final Deductions" numbers. Would it be possible to provide more differentiating titles? E.g. "Deductions you have entered" "Deductions IRS Allows" "Final Calculation of Itemized Deductions"?
Federal return listed $xxx in Capital Gains. State return listed $xxx+2000 in Capital Gains. I could not figure out how these two numbers were calculated. I would have liked a few more "Explain This" buttons.
Another confusion: "Professional Fees" includes doctors and dentists. "Qualified Medical Deductions" includes Professional Fees, Long Term Care, Rx, Eye, PersCare, Supplies, Medical Miles and Ins. Premiums and then becomes a category named "Medical & Dental." Confusing.
And then there's the category "Other Deductions" which was calculated but I never could figure out what was in there.
I am grateful to Turbo Tax for combing through the 6000 page U.S. Tax Code and applying it to our taxes but I keep remembering the NPR story years ago about how 13 tax preparers got wildly different results preparing a sample family's return, from refund to owing taxes...just thinking.
Thanks for your help again this year TT!
What's great about it: Just answer the questions, check out ways to save.
What's not so great: Getting back to a problem page--but then I found the 'flag' capability.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Great to use!

I use this product every year. I have tried others but nothing compares to Turbo Tax. It transfers all my data from the previous year thus I don't have to re-enter repetative info each year. It asks for updated info. It is set up for the novice to use or repeat users. I do love this.
What's great about it: simple. allows you to either go step by step or pick what you want to work on. allows you to look at the forms.
What's not so great: haven't found one yet
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbotax Premier

I would prefer if TurboTax provided built in tax experts you can ask instead of going to a community or previously written help documents. I really could have used the help this year with my 1099-B. I eventually worked it out through my brokerage firm, but it took much longer and they aren't tax experts. I would even consider paying a small fee to be given a chance to ask a question to a live person.
What's great about it: Lots of detailed info built in; easy questions to answer
What's not so great: Some of the complex calculations (IE 1099-B) are less than straightforward
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

My use of TurboTax dates back to 1994. The speed of completing the return especially if I choose my own areas to edit goes quickly.
What's great about it: Quick use for moderately complicated return
What's not so great: Some of the questions are about stuff I barely understand, not a CPA
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I forgot a large purchase sales tax that I had to add before final print out. Going back into the question/answer sequence it would not let me get to the specific area where unusual sales taxes are entered. I had to go to forms to make the entry. I should be able to revisit every! step in the sequence.
What's great about it: Question sequence reduces what I have to know.
What's not so great: coould not re-enter question series when I needed to.

Very disappointed

I do taxes for a lot of friends. This is the first year I had to file for a deceased spouse. I put deceased in the personal info but the rest of the program ignored this data and asked me questions as if this person was still living. I could not go further with the questions unless I filled in activity of the deceased. This was both the Federal and State programs. I finally gave up and just put in whatever would get me through it. PLEASE let me know what I should have done.
What's great about it: Transferring data
What's not so great: Did not properly allow for death of spouse.
