Buggy?
on April 13, 2016
Posted by: JimLZ
It wasn't clear whether it was something I was doing (boxes checked or unchecked, answers to questions in EasyStep, or something else), but numbers kept changing in entries related to foreign taxes so that a return that appeared to be complete would then turn up with errors, even after it previously had no errors and wasn't intentionally changed. Either there were some very misleading questions or there was something that was buggy, but this was different from the many years in the past when I have prepared similar returns.
What's great about it: Generally guides me to all of the forms that my relatively complicated return requires.
What's not so great: It seemed to be buggy, with some entries seeming to change without my doing anything to change them.

A Procrastinator's Friend
on April 13, 2016

Every year I tell myself to buy Turbo Tax early so I can file in February. Every year I wait until April to start entering the data for filing just before the deadline. Procrastination means finding other things to do until the filing deadline appears on the calendar when turning onto the April page. My materials are ready for use, and the Q&A approach works well for completing one segment at a time for typing in data (I do not import). I'll be back early next year to buy Turbo Tax, and I'll probably procrastinate again until April to use it.
What's great about it: Comfort with the Q&A format for entering data
What's not so great: Price creep from Deluxe to Premium for investment data input
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Print for filing
on April 13, 2016

Print for filing State was difficult to find. Did not want to pay extra for State filing since no refund was due. Took a long time to find how to print for filing by mail. Should have been easier to find a simple choice for the State filing.
What's great about it: Free E-filing for Fed was easy.
What's not so great: Print for filing State was difficult to find.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

The Standard
on April 13, 2016

I am a long term TurboTax user. This year I needed the Premier version as I had capital gains and losses. Despite some misgivings, the tax prep was, again, simple and straightforward. TurboTax will often prevent you from making an error (wrong number of digits for an ID number). At times the interview format seems tedious, but is certainly no worse than that of having it prepared by a tax professional. I appreciate the multiple reviews for missing information and errors. All in all, I've found TurboTax Premier Edition to be a good value and recommend it.
What's great about it: Simple, easy to follow. Reduced risk of error with electronic filing.
What's not so great: Occasionally requires information not provided on state documents
Pros: I bought or sold investments

THE Best Program for taxes.
on April 13, 2016
Posted by: investlady618
I have used this program for over fifteen years to do my taxes. I love the way I can do either or both choices--1) answer questions or 2) go through and enter my information. Even though I have had "tax education" and worked for CPA's, investments and difficult forms can be done by an individual with this program. I recommend it to everyone I speak with.
What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Nothing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Think all went well. Always feel good when done!

I updated to windows 10. Wiped out old info on hard drive but it was saved to external drive. Drive is not compatible with Windows 10 so could not retrieve. Tried reloading on another computer with older widows. Still could not retrieve so old references weren't available. Even reloaded last years disc. Not your problem but wondering if help available. Otherwise, once again, went well. I don't know how to enter 1099B info so will mail but wondering if more info possible...example on how to enter. Thanks.
What's great about it: I understand most questions and can get things entered. Easier to get around in that used to be. Can return to issues.
What's not so great: Would like to be able to ask questions when in progresss. could not get last year info.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

This year I had a hard time finding the School tax numbers for Ohio.
What's great about it: able to select what to work on
What's not so great: couldn't print without previewing
