Going' down hill

Both federal and state taxes had areas that I needed to input information and the program would not let me do it.
The fed return refused to accept approximatelhy $700 in write-offs for my itemization. (Yes > 2%) It also did not add my quarterly payments. I found them later and added them, but the program forced me to file an "underpayment of estimated tax" form despite the fact I had a refund.
The non-resident state return, was unusable. It asked for information to which I, as a K1, had no access and refused to finish the tax return without it. This was after refusing to accept the with-held taxes. I ended up filling out the state form by hand.
All and all, after using TurboTax since around 2001... by far the worst performance was this year.
What's great about it: It can at least still read last years for
What's not so great: Unable to input inportant information, forced to file inappropriate form

Easy return

Over the years I've tried several if not all the different tax software available and I believe that you're not going to find one better suited to do your taxes than TurboTax. Using the help menus could be a little annoying. I found that it brings up ten or twelve items and every time you finish one it cycles to the top. Which is not all bad however if the items were numbered it would be easier to locate the last one read. But that's a very minor issue.
What's great about it: Layout and help.
What's not so great: Some of the help could be organized a little better.

Doing my tax returns the program crashed once in the middle of my returns, and I had to re-type all the information (an extra hour of work). Additionally a bug in the system would not allow me to file my california return!
What's great about it: fast, easy to use
What's not so great: bugs in the program

What's not so great: Seemed to be glitch in the program at some point. It was corrected by forced shutdown.

TurboTax 2015 Highs and Lows
on April 12, 2016

Overall, once again very happy using TT for taxes.
The two misses that continue to plague the software are the following:
*Continuous 'check loops' when you go back -the system should not continue to prompt a check for potential savings if a user has already answered the query prior (e.g., donations to charity check every time)
*Accidental records creation and removal - would be better if you could more easily eliminate records that you have accidentally started
What's great about it: Very happy with system and flow of information overall
What's not so great: Two minor pitfalls with redundant checks and less-than-easy removals

Too much complexity for simple questions

1) Right now the program organization is personal info, income, then deductions. It is very confusing when the section on 1099-INT asks to connect to a brokerage account, then that is repeated for 1099-DIV. It is not clear if DIV are also retrieved during the INT step. My recommendation - at the end of the "personal" section ask for financial institutions (brokerage, banks) and connect *once* at that point. Then, when the INT and DIV sections are reached all the correct brokerage/bank info is already shown. Entries that shouldn't be there are easily removed.
2) The support for K-1 forms is too complex and confusing. My recommendation: Just go ahead and ask "what value is in" for the set of standard numbered boxes on the K-1. It would be easiest to have a single (albeit long) form on the screen that matches the layout of the K-1 form (all 7 of mine are identical). If that won’t be done, then go ahead and ask for a value for each numbered K-1 box making it clear that it is fine to leave it empty.
3) Also on K-1 entries - it is way too easy for a value on the K-1 to trigger some obscure filing form even when the values are so small that they won't affect the overall return. A single entry of one dollar caused TurboTax to direct me to (manually) complete form 8582-CR - which is WAAAAY beyond my ability to understand or complete. I realize that Intuit can't change the tax code. My recommendation: when an amount on any form triggers a complex form, especially forms not handled by TT, an explanation of WHY that complex form was triggered including the amounts involved.
4) The options for printing are reduced from last year. Rather than a set of steps (print, save a copy, and all the in between steps), please display a *single* print screen with an option menu (once for Federal, once for state): 1) print return for filing 2) save PDF for filing 3) save PDF for filing including worksheets 4) save PDF, select specific forms. To avoid the confusion between "print" and "save PDF" you could have a button/option to specify which output is desired. (For me print = PDF; I don't care.) When the printing/saving is complete, display the menu again. I always save a "for filing" PDF plus an"all forms" PDF just in case.
5) Recommendation for the charity deductions - I recommend adding a "see if it matters" option at the beginning that allows the user to enter a single total donation amount then skip to the next deduction section. If after other entries are completed, and if the itemized deduction is the best choice (rather than standard deduction), then go back and complete all the individual charity entries. A similar feature could be used for other deductions, like medical, that have a rather high threshold that determines is the deduction can be taken. Or at least, before starting medical, based on the AGI display how much medical expense is needed (7.5%?) in order for the deduction to be valid. If there's no way someone's medical expenses will reach the 7.5%, why bother going through the process?
What's great about it: Covered almost everything
What's not so great: Basic tasks continue to be overly complex

We have used Turbo Tax for years. My husband did our taxes until recently when I started doing it. It makes life around here less stressful.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Nothing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
