States are expensive
on February 8, 2016

Overall, easy to use software. There are several bugs with data elements that expected either a missing value or dollar amount (i.e., would not except zero as a response). However, I'm used to this from previous years and so I just deleted the form and skipped the data point. The best part of TurboTax is that the software automatically populates many forms from the previous years which makes filing quick!
What's great about it: Easy to use. Retains rental property data from previous year making taxes easier.
What's not so great: Expensive if you have to file more than one state. In my case, 4 states, 4 e-files.
Pros: I bought or sold investments, I moved

TT Premier 2015
on February 8, 2016

Major Plus:
Having used TT for many years, it makes it easy to load financial data, previous years records including rental data. It allows the direction of refunds to financial accounts, I use no other tax program as TT is easy to use and relatively straight forward even for very extensive returns. Fed and State, if printed is a stack of paper nearly 2" tall. Thus, I backup and additionally save my tax files on a SD card for the particular year. Let me emphasize, importing data from previous years forms is certainly a significant time saver and a very desirable feature. The state forms are made up from the Fed return making filing state forms simple!
Negatives:
1. Updater continually fails requiring manual updates. TT should make getting to the manual updater a lot easier
2. The opening page wants a bunch of data filled in every time, instead of just bypassing the screen. An improvement would be a skip it button.
3. TT is not and has never been touch screen user friendly. After years of use I have anticipated that to be corrected but alas it hasn't. I learned to get around it, but it does need a good touch screen enhancement.
4. Some questions require refilling out if you decided to reopen and look at specific sections. The questions were already answered, but TT erases them once reopened to review that section.
Overall I would give TT a very positive rating.
What's great about it: Loads last years data and provides overview
What's not so great: not touch screen user friendly/ Updater fails a lot
Pros: I bought or sold investments

When I imported the information on my three mutual funds, Turbo Tax imported the 1099-DIV forms correctly. It also imported the 1099-B form but treated it as if it were another 1099-DIV form. This resulted in all the dollar amounts being doubled. I had to contact support to correct the error.
What's not so great: Problem with Capital Gains

Problems for Canadian residence filing US 1040 tax
on February 9, 2016
Posted by: panky2
A Canadian resident does not usually get any 1099 , 1098 W4 etc Etc from anyone in Canada where he lives. So it is often not clear how to (where) to report income or dedections. Do I do it now as though I actually received the 1099 01098 etc slip or will the Turbotax eventually (later) give me (as a american residing in Canada) give me another chance to enter this data. So do I enter it now and fudge a little or do I not enter it now and hope the system will let me do it later as a foreigner entry. I moght forget about if I do not do it now and I do not get another chance by the system to enter it, Or will Ihave to come back to erase it so it is not entered twice - again I might forget or not know how, to erase the second entry.
Needs much more thought for use by Canadian residents!
What's great about it: Helps but not enough for Canadians
What's not so great: Things are often unclear for a Canadian on where to post incomes etc.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
