Navigates a complex return

Turbo tax does better than a paid accountant because I know more about my return and TT walks me through it and I don't miss anything.
What's great about it: Presents and fills in the forms I need
What's not so great: I cant't follow everything as so much is done for you

Old community answers should be removed.
What's great about it: Walks you through the whole process
What's not so great: Community support has some answers that are 4 years old.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Saved my Bacon
on April 11, 2016

Turbo Tax definitely saved my vegan bacon. I have a relatively straight forward return: work, donate, no Panamanian off-shore account, etc. The step-by-step guidance has really helped. I mean seriously...how can anybody keep up with all of the changes to the tax code at the Federal and state level? Turbo Tax asks me all of the questions so nothing is missed. Great job Turbo Tax team! Now, if they could only gather all of my tax documents and find me a date... :)
What's great about it: Simplicity, Step-by-step guidance
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

could not answer my 'security question' to reset password, so attempted to call but can't find contact number, very frustrating. ended up creating yet another account.
What's great about it: easy to navigate; organized; good online help
What's not so great: resetting password very difficult

I am not sure how many US citizens live outside US using US TurboTax to file, but I bet it is well over 100K - 200K or more.
What's great about it: The question asking how many months living outside US.
What's not so great: Personal info would not let me into out of US address. It is not easy to enter non-US income and income taxes paid.

DC

The package is generally well done both online and on PC/MAC. However it needs improvements in two respects. There is guidance for renting a room in your home but it is confusing. If you are not very careful and read and think about every on-screen sentence you end up with double counting of home mortgage interest and real estate taxes paid.
Secondly, when it comes to DC state taxes, there is a requirement that rental income triggers use of a separate form DC30 for unincorporated or franchise business. Turbotax will file a DC return and it knows that we have income over the limit but it does not tell you about this DC30 requirement. Hence you could innocently file and not know you are subject to fat fines. It should be easy for Turbotax to include the relevant forms and prevent this but it does not. Now I have to find a tax accountant, which I had wanted to avoid.
Regarding online support, everyone was friendly and tried to help but the first cut of support that you get when you call is more about the software and folks don't really know what the software is doing behind the scenes, for example with the rental income issue above. It can take hours on hold to get an actual tax advisor. They are great and knew their stuff but the wait was painful. Overall quite happy but want better state tax support. The gap in DC is important and could be costly.
What's great about it: Generally easy to use and simpler than doing forms yourself. Nice to manage loss and depreciation carry overs.
What's not so great: DC state support is limited and omits a crucial form for rental income

Devil is in the Details
on April 11, 2016

All the details are provided in an easy user-friendly format that enables anyone to complete Federal Tax Forms quickly and accurately.
The State Forms are also fairly user-friendly. The only difficult part is trying to figure out what dividends and other investment income may be exempted from a state's tax. I know it's a difficult topic but if there was an option to check online with a particular states tax dept. regarding what funds or investments are exempt that would be the "frosting on the cake." The same can be said of the Foreign Tax situation where one has to find out how much income from a Fund is derived from foreign investments related to a foreign tax paid and reported on a 1099-DIV. These values could be provided in an optional help section with info from an investment service or the IRS. Of course providing an easy way to quickly get such information while working with Turbo Tax would require that the IRS and Investment firms provide the info and make it available to Turbo users. To date we have to contact individual Fund websites or our state tax dept. to get the info and then return to Turbo when we have the data. Now that I am thinking about it perhaps the Payers should provide this info along with the 1099-DIV or INT forms?
What's great about it: Very user friendly and comprehensive tax software
What's not so great: It's difficult but I would like more info on State exempt vs Federal exempt investment income.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Saved me THOUSANDS!

With the ability to jump around, and enter data as it became available, was very handy. It also let me sort of jump ahead, enter key values, and get a ballpark idea of how much I would potential owe, or get in refund.
What's great about it: Ability to jump around, and TurboTax keeps up with all the details.
What's not so great: I'll need to buy a copy for 2016.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
