So-so

1) Download for calculating foreign tax credit was incorrect; needed "various" when only one country given on download from brokerage.
2) To correct non-covered sale of assets, I had to go into forms and directly alter form to reflect long-term holdings.
3) To correct an entry of "o." for K-1 16G foreign tax paid, I had to create a K-1 16C foreign earnings of "0.". Otherwise TT emitted an error.
4) Found it difficult to maneuver to account for a final K-1 form; there were multiple questions that had to be answer before 19C entries ended up on form 4797. This turned into a trial and error process.

It's over for another year!

I always wait until the last minute because I hate filing my tax return and it seems to take forever to figure everything out - and the tax code was clearly not written for non accountants like me. This year I downloaded turbotax and used it from the start. Yes, it still took a long time, because I have a lot of forms, but I didn't reach the level of despair and frustration that I normally do. Probably because I just kept following the path that it gave me. Eventually I had covered every possible credit and deduction. I'm not at all concerned about errors, because it's so straightforward. I even saved some money on foreign tax credits, which was new for me.
What's great about it: cues for everything, very complete, I feel comfortable about the accuracy of my return
What's not so great: Inventory program in charitable contributions didn't include several items that I needed and doesn't allow write-ins

Difficult to use

Could not get to print on home computer. IRS provided PIN would not work.
What's great about it: Easy to auto download from financial institutions
What's not so great: Difficult to save and print. Frustrating

no sweat tax preparation

Been using Turbo Tax for years and it just gets better and better. Takes very little time to complete
What's great about it: very explicit with all the info you would possibly need
What's not so great: none

What's great about it: Being able to enter the interview at any point and to return to make corrections. Analyses of alternatives.
What's not so great: Limits on nicknames.

Each year it gets easier. Has gotten much better at handling Ohio's idiosyncratic local tax systems
What's great about it: easy to use, pick the right product for your needs or else you will need to upgrade
What's not so great: Still have to pay for state filing

What's not so great: sometimes using the "Back" button takes a bit to realize where you went.
