I have used Turbo Tax for several years. It makes it so much easier to ensure I am taking all the deductions I am allowed. My filing experience has become less time & drama than before when I filed on my own. Thank you Turbo Tax!
What's great about it: Asks all the questions for you
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Remember questions; Print/copy summaries,etc.

1) Please change the program so that when it does not ask the same questions again and again such as comping into inputting Rental Properties. Should allow to get right into entering or editing income and expenses. Etc.
2) Please change the program to allow for printing and copying of summary tax data or comparison chart between current and prior years.
3) Keep more or the prior data for comparison - and for printing, copying so there is a good history of the tax situation.
What's great about it: Accurate info.
What's not so great: Unable to print or copy data from summary or compaison charts.

Had a version control problem. I saved and then renamed the saved file so I would have a copy if a newer version happened. This seemed to confuse the program. I had to make a copy, rename it and leave the orginal copy name unchanged. I also had some confusion with inputting 1099R forms by importing. I would import say for interest and then import for say sched B and in the end would have duplicates but when I deleted the duplicates I ended up deleting what I wanted to save. So I just deleted everything and reinput the 1099R data
Finally, My financial advisor had cheched my form using HOME and BUSINESS (I am using PREMIUM) This caused a confusion with the sched C (some problem preventing me from filing because of errors in comparing 2014 with 2015 data that I couldn't fix using my version of Turbotax (Premium)
What's great about it: Generally ok
What's not so great: some confusion about 1099R importing

Fed over State

Turbo Tax is great, no question. If you have a basic return, it's fantastic. If you have a more complicated return, you may need to call them for support (which was great - they call you so no need to sit on hold for 50 minutes). They need to work on the foreign income portions of the software. Forms 1116 and 2555 can be difficult to complete as the descriptions are weak or not available. For example - There is no description on how you fill out line 12 of form 1116. You follow the prompts to the end, and then get an error in the check without explanation.
What's great about it: Basic return points were easy to follow along
What's not so great: Weak on foreign portions
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments, I moved

No fun taxes

This was an attempt to try electronic filing after many years of doing the work by hand. More than one person in the family had use of the software. It did not start out with a "new filing" page, i still have no idea how to get there. It was not clear where the forms were or when you could review them. It did not prompt for all the items needed, which you would only have been aware of by having prepared your own forms previously. You had to cause it to repeat sections more than once to pick up all the information required. i am not impressed and do not believe there was any time or money saved.
What's great about it: attempts to walk you through everything
What's not so great: Does a lot of background work that is not seen/understood

Go to the forms themwelves

TT certainly makes it easier to complete your tax return. but it does take time and practice to become facile at it. Being able to go into the forms themselves is a skill that grows with experience. I would find it difficult if one didn't have access to the forms that contain the data. I would have liked to compare my actual deductions with the standard write-off. It might have encouraged me to dig more deeply in looking for possible deductions. I neglected to submit more charity. deductions and more medical if I knew better what was the STANDARD write offf. "But all in all it was good.
What's great about it: It does the job and gives me choices..
What's not so great: I would have like to see how my actual expenses compared to just telling me the standard write-off for deductions etc.
