Very confusing filing experience, worse every year
on April 10, 2016

Turbo tax is getting worse every year. Very confusing. Errors are very unclear. it never interviewed, but ask you to fill. you have no idea what the errors are about. It is also difficult to see the sections. When you file, you feel you are in the dark following a blind guide. Terrible. I am not sure I will use it at all next year.
What's great about it: very little
What's not so great: very confusing. terms difficult to understand

Have been using Turbo Tax since the Chip-Soft days. Each year, the product has been maturing and making the process more straight-forward for novice while keeping it powerful and accessible for the professional power user.
What's great about it: Well Organized

Getting better - still could use some improvement
on April 10, 2016

I use this every year for myself and my mother. It is becoming easier to do now that I am retired and she is no longer runs a business. However, since I do her taxes, I want the IRS to contact ME, not HER, if they have a problem (she is 96). There is a special block to check for having the IRS contact another party about the return, but there is no question about it, and no way to enter it directly on to Form 1040. You have to remember to do it, and then you have to search for the special TT form that lets you enter it. This should be part of the interview, or should at least be carried over from one year to another automatically. You could ask whether this person continues to be the contact person, if there is an entry from a previous year..
What's great about it: imports all data from previous years
What's not so great: still have to search for place to enter other party to contact

OK, but

Have been using this product for years. It has grown more, not less, complex– as has our tax code. Entry errors arise if one goes from 'easy step' to forms and back. Charitable deduction entries are overly complex beyond requirements of a paid tax preparer. Some data entry confusion arises because the tax 'lingo' is not obvious to the lay public and not easily understood, even following the 'help' sections. Not easy to identify base source of data fed into the program if it is in error. Calculations are automatic but impossible to dissect without going to tax calculations and running each step by hand-- a 'show our work' with steps would be helpful.
Many of these issues arise from the probable involvement of savvy tax accountants who know all this stuff already. Others from the tax code itself. And, of course, the competition is lean so incentive to improve is also.
What's great about it: auto calculation, automatic inclusion of needed forms, ease of transmission
What's not so great: Clunky steps, inadequate explanation, difficult to enter donations unless you purchase Intuit's product for this,

Amend prior year (2014) taxes NOT work
on April 10, 2016
Posted by: amendnogo
Could not amend taxes for 2014 due to incorrect numbers.
Attempted to amend 2014 taxes, already filed and payment received. After updating and reviewing results, realized it did not correctly represent 2014 original numbers correctly. This made me question many aspects of turbo tax.
Attempted to find error in form view but could not find where and how it transfered numbers from 1040 to 1040X as 1040X was not visible.
Went back to original tax file. Made the necessary updates (as if it were the original tax submission) and no change to refund resulted. Therefore, I found I did not need to amend.
Happy to find that out as I would have had to do it manually.
What's not so great: attempt to amend 2014 taxes did not bring forward original numbers correctly
