Feeling like a CPA
on April 10, 2016

TurboTax makes me feel like a CPA without ever having earned this degree. I feel more control over my finances and can directly see the impact of financial decisions as my tax bracket evolves. It's more thorough than ever yet also easier to use than ever, so kudos to the designers and everyone they work with for pulling off such approachable yet accountable software.
What's great about it: Thorough guided walkthrough that answers questions before I even ask them.
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I inadvertently added a form I didn't need, and when I tried to determine how to delete it, the instructions did not match what I was seeing on the screen.
What's great about it: Fairly User Friendly. Takes you through all the steps necessary to capture all deductions.
What's not so great: Directions not clear for deleting forms.

Disappointment

I am growing more and more disappointed with TurboTax as the years go on. I have been a turbo tax user since the early 2000s. Problem is you nickel and dime for everything! I don't understand why you have to charge for multiple states and multiple e-filing. It is ridiculous! I could have hired a tax attorney for everything I paid you for.
What's not so great: nickel and dime you for everything

Dropped in ratings from last year

last year as I went through it the program would tell me "last year you ... would you like to do the same this year?" it didn't do that very much at all. this was especially true when it came to importing. it did not import my bank info this time. it also didn't ask questions like did you buy or sell a house... and it did not answer my questions as well. over all its still good but not great like it was.
What's great about it: works great if you used it in previous years due to importing features from previous years
What's not so great: this year was missing a few features we previously had
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Easy to use, just fill in the blanks with the required data. At times if you did not keep good records for the tax year, it can be a chore.
What's great about it: Easy to use, fill in the blanks
What's not so great: Sometimes confusing

The Good and the Bad

"Donations" I wanted to correct the Charity name and was not allowed. I had to delete the Charity name and do it over again. You guys need to change this for 2016 TurboTax.
"Capital Gains" I was unable to Verify (check) the individual buy and sell equity transactions using TurboTax and was forced to bring up "1040 Form Schedule D" to check each transaction.
You need to change this for 2016 TurboTax.
The "Operative Word" is Flexability.
What's great about it: Overall I like the Q & A
What's not so great: Can't review entries without going to Forms i.e. 1040 Schedule
Pros: I bought or sold investments

found errors from previous cpa filings

since I now have the time to re-educate myself, I'm taking supplemental directions from an IRS auditor retiree. Turbo Tax is an excellent way to structure and file federal taxes. State taxes for out of state residency income - not so much. Forms don't understand blank lines and once blank lines are created,in TurboTax, they are difficult to remove.
What's great about it: becoming self sufficient
What's not so great: hard knocks
