Problem with Employer Stock Transactions
on April 9, 2016
Posted by: jhill5
I noticed one item I had trouble with. I had 2 employer stock transactions for the year. One was included on the W2 and the one late in the year was not. The program would not let me indicate that during the normal interview process. Either it wanted both to be not included or both included on the W2 but not one was and one wasn't. Had to go in and manually adjust the Summary of Compensation Income from Employer Stock Transaction form. Would be nice if this could be fixed as I have this situation every year and it's a pain to have to remember to check and do it manually on the form.
What's great about it: Generally easy and intuitive to use.
What's not so great: Problem encountered detailed in review below

Son's Tax Return
on April 9, 2016
Posted by: JJB2015
I have used TT for many years. It keeps improving each year. This year I had to enter my son's grad school expenses. The TT walked me through it quite well.
My son was a part-year NY State/City resident, and all his income prior to joining the grad school was from NY State/NY City. I thought I entered the data correctly. TT kept citing error. Finally, I managed to correct it. The explanation of the errors and what needs to be corrected was not explained well.
What's great about it: Easy, Education expense related entries were easy
What's not so great: NY State Return's income allocation was confusing. Errors were not explained well.

I love using TT but would like to know when I enter something which line it will appear on the tax return. E,g, questions for entering K-1 info were not directly in sync with the questions on the return.
What's not so great: Some of the questions should be more directly related to lines on return
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Generally works well, but could be streamlined
on April 9, 2016

I have a lot of charitable contributions, usually to the same charities as last year, and I would just like to update the amounts each year, but TurboTax insists on walking me through a bunch of dialogs for each one.
I also have a bunch of fairly similar auto-sale stock transactions, and it's REALLY tedious to click the same 15-20 buttons and multiple pages in order to enter about 4 numbers for each transaction.
Finally: before filing, how about prompting me to apply my refund to the next year's estimated taxes? Yes, I could have seen that option earlier, but you could remind me :-)
What's great about it: Seems to cover all of my tax situations
What's not so great: Entering lots of stock sales or charitable contributions much more tedious than necessary
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Yeowza, That's the Way You Do It

Good program, I've used Turbo Tax for well over a decade. When I found the advice on a federal tax return I filed through a tax attorney in the local area to have an error of over $1,500, that's when I decided to try Turbo Tax and do it myself. Peace of mind is available through Audit Defense, a fee-based service that has a tax pro handle any IRS audits instead of trying to wing it on my own. Ordinary computer skills are all that's needed, the format is well laid out and easy to follow. Just keep good financial records throughout the year and make sure you have all of the necessary tax documents when it's time to file. This program provides a provision for secure, automatic downloads of investment records online when you provide your login information to access the account. Works well and the data transmission is encrypted for security.
What's great about it: Tips on gray areas where you just aren't sure what to enter
What's not so great: No face to face questions for clarity
