The price of Turbo tax premier edition, plus to file your taxes for MD and the audit fee is almost the same amount that an accountant would charge except that you don't have to wait 20 minutes on the phone for an answer and you actually do all the work. I should add that I tried getting the audit protection option, however when I tried to use the pay with credit card option, it would double the fee. So I had to opt out f it.
What's great about it: Save my return to my computer
What's not so great: Almost the same price as an accountant
Pros: I moved

Easy to Complete

AMT section asked a couple of unclear questions at the start. It seems the program should have been able to extract the requested info. from the information already entered into the program.
Explanation of qualified dividend should be included directly in questions within the program rather than requiring me to research the differences in these 2 types of dividends.
There should be an overview explanation of the AMT calculation. For example, you should explain the main categories of income and deductions that are included or excluded within the AMT section such that people can minimize AMT charges for future years.
In the itemized deduction section where deductions must exceed 2% of AGI you should address that 2% requirement (with a calculation using AGI) early in the process. With the 2% calculation offered upfront, people wouldn't waste time gathering info. and entering it into the program only to have it be irrelevant since the "total" didn't exceed 2%. You should ask if these expenses ... don't exceed 2%, select skip.
What's great about it: Very easy to enter. Walks you through all options
What's not so great: a couple of questions at start of AMT were unclear. Why charge for state return - 1 state return should be free.

I’m hesitant to use Its Deductible next year.
I’ve been a Turbo Tax User for years and it has served me well.
What's great about it: The help function got me through how to eliminate double reporting of income on stock options
What's not so great: The Import from Intuit’s It’s Deductible did not work; open a case with Intuit but they could not find a fix.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

State Taxes

It would be helpful to see entries from the federal tax forms when reviewing the specifics in the state portion. I had to go back and forth from federal and state to understand what specific income, tax, deduction, credit the state question was referring to.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Software problems and tricky international taxes
on April 6, 2016

I have been using Turbotax for several years now to do our rather complicated taxes (foreign income, rental income, etc.)
While the program is overall helpful, I recommend to use the CD version, if you have to file for foreign income, as the order of forms on-line will not match your requirements (especially form 1116). This year's Turbotax had a few soft ware problems - e.g. kept sending me error messages for "too long middle initial" even though there was no middle initial; couldn't enter the state of residence on some forms unless overriding it on the form menu, sometimes slow to process and getting stuck before being able to tick mark the next item.
If you have to declare foreign bank accounts it is a very tedious process - it would be nice, if that could be populated by data entered in previous tax returns or would allow for the option to repeat a once entered address/country, etc.
What's great about it: got the taxes done
What's not so great: some software problems, tedious data entry
