Royal Pain

Every year I dread trying to get Turbo Tax on my computer more than doing the return. I would do it by hand if it were not for carry forward schedules (like depreciation) and new tax laws. You need to explain the differences between the software in the cloud, on a disk, or downloaded. Now I know that I have to download because I want to see the worksheets. It always takes me a few trips to the Apple store or on the phone with TurboTax which is not easy. Also, printing before filing is awful!! This year I figured out to go to the "Forms" , save as a PDF, and email to myself. So, getting the software - awful, putting in information - easy, seeing your results and printing for review - awful. Even so because of year to year schedules and information, will do it again next year. May have to hire someone to deal with the electronic side of this process.
What's great about it: Keeps up with changes in the law. Easy to enter.
What's not so great: Cannot easily see or print the actual return before filing.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Foreign Tax Credit needs improvement
on April 6, 2016

I finally used "various" for the sources of foreign taxes and income, but I had calculated how much the foreign taxes and income there were per country. I wish Turbo Tax could handle it easily. I tried following the special instructions several times and had to re-enter a list of about 40 countries multiple times and finally gave up. If it is downloaded from a brokerage, TurboTax should be able to do all the calculations, figure out which sheet has to be first and do it. I think TurboTax is great except for the handling of foreign tax credit.
What's not so great: Foreign Tax Credit
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Respect for the dead
on April 6, 2016

When preparing my deceased mother-in -law's final return with Turbo Tax, all questions were addressed to her as if she were still alive. This included the upsells at the end for your advisory services ,etc. One of the first questions I answered, indicated the passing of my mother-in law. From that point forward all questions should have been addressed to the "preparer" not the deceased. I realize this is a minor point but still important and should be corrected.
Thank You, George G.

non-US 1099-DIV

non-US companies on NYSE don't have US tax id's. Turbo tax needs to ask or adjust when electronically downloading tax info from partner companies like Fidelity or Computershare that are holding your stocks of non-US companies , otherwise turbo tax review process gets stuck with no apparent solution. Hopefully was able to work around by deleting tax ID info and adding address and city info and maintain the name showing foreign entity was C/O care of a US company as shown on non-US company statements. One user suggestion was to re-enter those manually, but Turbo Tax should be adjusted to ask or do this for non-US dividends or such.
What's great about it: turbo tax allowed work around
What's not so great: not clear when downloading from Non US co's

Have used TurboTax for four years and went well until last year. Ended up sending back for a refund. Decided to give it one more try this year and everything went perfectly. Hope the IRS thinks so, too.
What's great about it: Everything went perfectly this year.
What's not so great: N/A

2015 taxes

I've used TurboTax for several years and have always been impressed with the software product. 2015 was not exception. The only complaint is that it didn't ask me (or was not obvious) if I made any estimated payments during the year, and I almost paid out too much. I did capture that and went into "forms mode" to make the corrections and record my previous estimated payments.
What's great about it: TurboTax is very solid
What's not so great: Didn't point to me previous tax payments
