I have been using turbotax for about 20 years. My tax situation is a little complex. I have extensive investment holding and a rental property. Turbo tax makes it all simple, asking you easy to follow questions with appropriate levels of help available when needed
What's great about it: easy to follow questions
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Makes the Complex Simple
on April 5, 2016

My return is fairly complex with rentals, partnerships and other investments. Every year, TurboTax guides me through everything and carries forward items from the previous year as appropriate. Occasionally, it isn't clear to me where data was pulled from the Federal return to feed into the state return (ie, capital gains), though overall, TurboTax is an amazing tool! I've been audited twice in the past, so I can say that working with AuditDefense was easy and the audits completed with no findings.
What's great about it: Guidance through many topics
What's not so great: Identifying source data from Federal to State
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Always Very Good

Although I had some difficulty with the foreign tax credit, there is no way I could figure and track year -to-year carry-overs. Turbo Tax does a wonderful job of putting everything together.
What's great about it: Guidance and Do-it-yourself work very well together, especially for review and minor fixes.
What's not so great: A few glitches, as in getting foreign tax credit right. Can not get a transfer from Quicken to work well.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Stable Platform

I've used Turbotax since the early 80s in both forms and question mode. Its smooth and stable.....I specifically like the ability to save and shutdown and then later come back to automatically pick up at the screen earlier left. You can see my taxes get done in dribs and drabs...but its a whole lot better than using an accountant as my friends do. When I used to be smart I used forms mode, cuz I knew it all. Now, more humble, I use question mode and have found the software knows more and is able to guide me well. We itemize and I like that all necessary supporting forms are automatically opened up and filled without my initiation..
What's great about it: Liked most everything....fed and state...Premier Edition
What's not so great: Loop in NY State at the review point...just break out...no problem.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

PA return
on April 5, 2016

When Turbo Tax PA reviews the 1099Rs to categorize it only give a few words on the payee. I have so many that are similar that I have to go back to FED return and write them down so I can be sure if they are pension, 401k, IRA or annuity.
What's great about it: the full title for 1099R's does not show on questions
Pros: I bought or sold investments

one glitch
on April 5, 2016

The box with cash income wouldn't respond after the first sum was put in. There was no revision of the number possible, had to submit cash income under a different heading. I didn't know what else to do, had to buy the audit guarantee in case this comes up. Very funky software glitch. I've been using turbo for many years, this never happened before, a Premier version also. I doubt I won a prize!
What's great about it: easy to understand and fill
What's not so great: one box (cash income) wouldn't respond

2015 Turbo Tax
on April 5, 2016

Have used Turbo Tax since 5.25" disk days. It has continually improved. This year was little challenging as I sold stock options and had some difficulty in navigating due to the location of buttons and delayed responsiveness of system. The graphics appear to be very much like iPhone icons in appearance - very elementary in colors and style.
What's great about it: Ease of filing and getting IRS pin
What's not so great: Difficult to navigate NQSO and RSU stock sales.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have used TTx for many years now and continue to actually enjoy using it even if it (the gov) does cost me dearly when I do.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
