Not A Taxing Job
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: bobi1953
This is the best tax program ever. The only thing better would be no taxes at all.
What's great about it: Everything, very easy to navigate.
What's not so great: None
Pros: I bought or sold investments

2015 Tax Returns
on April 5, 2016

I have been using Turbo tax and Quicken for a long time and my taxes are probably above average in difficulty due to sale of long term investments now that I am in retirement.
Determining capital gains for long held investments is a bit of a nightmare as some shares are in downloadable data bases and some are not.
Quicken was helpful but not as much as it could. It would be nice to see two software platforms better integrated.
What's great about it: Download of investment transaction data
What's not so great: Cost
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Apparently Pensions & Annuities Are The Same Thing
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: dgw9
Turbo Tax was convinced that my 1099-R from my defined benefit pension was an annuity, so they hounded me for the annuity start date and other things. I couldn't overwrite it and I couldn't file my taxes without having something in those boxes. A much better exploration/explanation section is needed.
If I am reading things right, Turbo Tax can import tax files written in .pdf from other tax programs, but can't import their own turbo-tax generated pdf files. So you have to keep copies of the .tax20xx files if you want the program to import data from last years taxes into your current year.
What's great about it: Auto download from financial institutions
What's not so great: can't read their own generated .pdf files
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Disappointed
on April 5, 2016

Expected professional assistance from TurboTax on identity theft issue. Unfortunate that this happened but this must be a situation known to TurboTax now. Next steps in contacting IRS unclear. Then entry of six digit PIN very difficult to locate and correct. Then charge for e-file for Ohio too expensive. T pring apaper copy was almost like TurboTax was forcing taxpayer to e-file - could you make it any more difficult.
What's great about it: Easy entry of data. Good tips on procedures.
What's not so great: Poor guidance on identity theft recovery. Poor guidance on printing out state return
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I tried for almost an hour to import my quicken tax file into Turbo Tax. Even though my Quicken was open, I used help, followed directions I still couldn't get it to import.I have successfully done this for the past 10 years and have no idea what the problem was this year.
What's great about it: easy to follow mostly
What's not so great: couldn't import my quicken tax file
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
