Easy

Turbo tax made my life and this difficult job so much easier.
It points out errors and what figures I should recheck and reminds me of other deductions. I will never use anything else...nor an accountant!

GOOD PRODUCT
on April 5, 2016

EASY TO COMPLETE MORE DIFFICULT THIS YEAR TO LOOK THINGS UP IN PUBLICATIONS OR GETTING ACTUAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED, NOT JUST MINE BUT THE SAME QUESTIONS WERE ASKED BY OTHERS WITH INCOMPLETE ANSWERS AND TOO MANY TO LOOK THROUGH RATHER THAN A EASY HELP. IT NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE BASICS. THE PROGRAM IS A GOOD TOOL BUT IS GETTING RATHER STEEP IN THE PRICE.
What's great about it: EASE, COMPLETE QUESTIONS
What's not so great: HELP CENTER DOESN'T ALWAYS ANSWER COMPLETE QUESTIONS HARD TO FIND HELP AND PUBLICATIONS THIS YEAR

Joint vs Separately
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: KRJandJMJ
After filling in everything for filing jointly, I saved two copies and eliminating half the information from each to test out filing separately. The most concerning thing about this was that many of the fields, such as income, showed the correct numbers in the summary/ table of contents page, but were not included in the final tax due/refund calculation. This forced me to go through all the questions of all the sections again to find out where else these calculations errors occurred.
What would really be nice is a function at the end where it could check to see if married filing separately would be beneficial. Particularly, being able to flag items for either of the spouses so that it simultaneously added each item to either one or the other's return. This would prevent duplicating items on the two returns, and prevent missing items you accidentally deleted on both returns.
What's great about it: The ability to add Flags. The ability to access the actual forms. Importing of Stocks data.
What's not so great: The calculations were wrong when switching from filing jointly to filing separately.

Only helpful if people can pay with credit card
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: Okeko
After a few hours of breezing through the TT desktop application (as I've done in the past 10 years), i was stuck trying to make a credit card payment online before I can eFile. It took me an hour to finally get the payment through, after I've tried every possible combination of tricks I could find in the forum. A complete waste of my time.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Cannot pay online using credit card

Good and Better
on April 5, 2016

1. I moved outside of US and found TurboTax does NOT support FBAR. Please go the extra mile to find out whether one NEEDs to do FBAR first, then only inform those in need to go IRS as required.
2. TurboTax did not handle well my partial-residence situation in California. In the end I elected to claim CA residence for entire 2015 instead of 10+ months.
What's great about it: Switching between Forms and Step-by-Step is smooth.
What's not so great: No FBAR support
Pros: I moved

Schedule K-1 Error
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: S0LAR
An entry from the Sched K-1 (Form 1065) was not properly transferred to the filing document. This prevented e-filing to be transmitted. There was no manual override or a cross reference to make the correction. I had to delete the item and file a manual amendment.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax does an amazing job of organizing the receipts with step by step procedure
What's not so great: Transfer Sched K-1 data was not correct to filing document

2015 1040
on April 5, 2016
Posted by: Roncj
In the distant past I did my own taxes by hand. Now I wouldn't dare take on such a task. The Federal tax system is out of control. Federal 1040 tax filing would now be impossible without having an aid like Turbo Tax
What's great about it: I like the question-answer format
What's not so great: I didn't have any big dislikes other than the complexity of our Federal Tax system
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
