Signing 2015 Return
on February 5, 2016
Posted by: GWF941
"Sign your 2015 Return" presented a screen with the PIN numbers from 2014. It appeared that I could use those numbers again for 2015. I left them and moved forward.
When I got to "Review Your Federal Filing Choices" screen, the second choice "You have provided your identifying information (new e-filing PIN or AGI) for e-filing" seemed odd. Further checking revealed that I needed to generate new PIN numbers.
I think it would be better if the "Sign your 2015 Return" screen instructed you to generate the new numbers at that point. The help screen "How do I get my 5-digit Electronic Filing Pin?" states "Your assigned PIN can only be used to e-file your 2015 return, so there's no need to memorize. . . "
What's great about it: Process was very smooth and instructions were excellent.
What's not so great: Signing the return with 2015 Pin wasn't clear.

Always straight forward

Have used TurboTax for 16 years and it gets easier every time, despite having two unrelated businesses and investments. Has saved me thousands in accounting fees over the years. I only wish that the TurboTax people would answer consumer questions that go beyond 1 month, especially those pertaining to vehicle use and disposal in business. There are many of the same questions asked and not answered.
What's great about it: Easy to input all my numbers or transfer from Quicken. Especially easy when transferring carryovers from last year.
What's not so great: Need better support for vehicle use and disposal

I have been using Turbo Tax for years. It is so easy! Even when my husband started doing work on the side, and when we added a rental home... Turbo Tax was there to walk us through all the info needed to proceed!
What's great about it: Easy to find answers.
What's not so great: ??
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Works well - but not as clear as in prior years

Auto filling only worked one time. After that, I had to punch in data by hand.
General format did not have clearly marked save buttons, and if one has to make a detour while entering data, returning to where one left off is unclear.
Selection format for answers (yes for positive answer and no for negative answer) is inconsistant and may cause incorrect responses if person entering info is not very careful. Granted, anyone entering tax info should be very careful, but TurboTax is meant for non-professional use.
State e-filing fee, after initial advertising of one state included in purchase price. This is not new, but is a recurring irritation. As a longstanding user, it is an annoyance that one day may cause me to try something else.
What's great about it: Auto filling of data is great - when it works
What's not so great: Over all format not as clear as previous years
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Worked well for refunds

I have used Turbo Tax for years for my own tax return as well as my adult daughters and their families. This year my computer let go and the flash drive didn't save the files I needed (Laptop may have been going bad a little at a time or something else failed in download.) I found directions to start from scratch very easy to follow, but easier when you don't have to type every detail back in.
Usually it takes a little while, minimum typing, especially if you consistently have saved prior tax years. IF you are starting Turbo Tax for the first time, remember unless employers, banks, and other tax things change you pretty much just have to fill in amounts and be certain business names are consistent.
What's great about it: If you save things on laptop or flash drive they make year to year much easier.
What's not so great: If your laptop breaks and the prior year's files don't load properly either to or from the flash drive you' work longer
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Usual excellence
on February 5, 2016

As has been my usual policy, I go off, purchase Turbo Tax and do my taxes at home. It always helps me figure out what I need to have and accurately walks me though the steps I need. However, this year, as not all of my income was earned in Oregon, it wasn't clear at first reading why I needed to adjust it.
Also, in the tax id fraud prevention, it asked for my driver's license number. In Washington an asterisk (*) is part of my driver's license number and the tax software wouldn't accept it. If they fixed that, I would have given it 5 stars instead of 4 as I had to bypass a security option that could have been necessary if I had opted for a check.
What's great about it: could do it at home, explained what I needed to know
What's not so great: some explainations were lacking, id theft feature not accurate
