MLP Sales Still a Problem
on April 3, 2016

Searching Turbotax handling of MLPs on the internet shows the confusion surrounding sales of MLPs. There is lots of discussion and multiple opinions from users and Turbotax consultants. It's a nightmare to figure out how to enter MLP sales in Turbotax without causing double taxation from the entries in the 1099 and again in the K-1 interview. The best I could come up with after hours on the internet reading many opinions was as follows: Using the K-1 sales sheet calculate the Capital Gain/Loss. Adjust the 1099 cost to generate the calculated Capital Gain/Loss. In the K-1 interview enter that you disposed of the MLP. Enter the Ordinary Gain in the Sales Price box Enter Zero in the Partnership Basis box Enter the Ordinary Gain again in the Ordinary Gain box.
From what I read this prevents duplicate entries in Form 8949 and Schedule D under Box F. Duplicate entries cause double taxation on the MLP sale.
The information provided by Turbotax consultants is not very helpful because they usually refer to the IRS tax code which is nothing but a convoluted endless series of references and impossible for most people to understand.
The MLP sales sheets in the K-1s always show the data that should be entered and the calculations that need to be done. Usually it shows items 1-10 from units disposed to AMT basis adjustments. It's the same for nearly all the MLPs. It would be helpful if Turbotax provided guidance on how to enter this information based on the table rather than referring to the IRS tax code and also how to avoid double taxation because of the entries in the 1099. There has been no guidance on this issue after years of complaints. What Turbotax users need is step by step guidance not reference to the IRS tax code. Most MLPS indicate that a Section 751 statement must be filed when the MLP is sold. There is no provision for providing such a statement in Turbotax or any guidance on the content of the statement. With the popularity of MLPs in recent years it seems that TT would devote more time to providing straight forward and simple to understand guidance to users.
What's great about it: Handles everything except MLPs well
What's not so great: MLP interview causes double taxation

It was easier than I expected. The terminology wasn't that complicated and after answering the questions the computer put everything on the appropriate forms.
What's great about it: Not too complicated
What's not so great: Kind of long to complete it.

TAXES 2015 TURBO TAX REVIEW
on April 3, 2016
Posted by: ATLASTA
KEEPS ADDING MORE ITEMS THAT USER HAS TO PAY EXTRA FOR. IF YOU PAY FOR 5 FEDERAL RETURN VERSION YOU SHOULD GET 5 STATE RETURNS ALSO. TO INCLUDE 1 SIMPLE K1 FROM A FAR I NOW HAVE TO BUY THE PREMIUM INSTEAD OF THE DELUXE. AT A CERTAIN POINT THE DIFFERENCE TO PAY SOMEONE TO DO YOUR TAXES IS NOT ENOUGH TO KEEP BUYING TURBO TAX AND DOING THEM YOUR SELF.
What's great about it: SAVES TIME
What's not so great: KEEPS ADDING CHARGES FOR THINGS THAT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN INCLUDED

What's great about it: Has my records from 1999, so if I forget it does not
What's not so great: I am happy with Turbo Tax so no Cons
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo Tax crashed and I lost everything!!!
on April 3, 2016
Posted by: TurboBroke
After spending nearly 4 hours preparing my returns, TurboTax crashed. My documents were unable to be found after spending 45 minutes on the phone with the TurboTax helpline. I don't have time to waste a half day with nothing to show for it. Having used TurboTax for the last 15+ years I am very disappointed with this years version. Maybe it's time that I look for an alternative solution.
What's not so great: no auto save function; product crashed
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

I have been using turbo tax for well over 20 years and find it is the only way to go for Fed and State returns. Relatively fast and very through.
What's great about it: Interview process is easy and through
What's not so great: Search help is not as helpful as it could be
