2015 Tax Tonic

There seems to be a recent trend among brokerages, with managed accounts, to put their clients into more and more MLP's resulting in K-1 forms at the end of the year. These are semi-complex and tedious financial instruments to deal with at tax time. Some firms try to skip the K-1 forms by reporting MLP gains as "Other Income" using form 1099-MISC. This does not work well, as TurboTax assumes the gains are income from a job/business and leads you down a blind alley to a non-reportable dead end. Alternatively, when K-1 data is downloaded from a "tax-package" firm, if it has zeros in K-1 form, Part III, Boxes 1,2 & 3 then Turbo Tax forces three (3) more useless K-1's to be generated thus making a long night even longer. Also, some "tax-package" firms provide K-1 data tax file downloads into Turbo Tax while others do not, resulting in tedious manual K-1 data entry.
What's great about it: Good walk-through guides. Good Smart Check review at end.
What's not so great: Need more download source options. Need better 1099-MISC and K-1 forms entry & processing.

Turbo would not allow me to file electronically. It kept asking me for social security # of my dependent child which I gave. It then said it was my ss # This year has been frustrating and a terrible filing.

My only wish list: It would be great if Turbo Tax included the Form 8606 for distributions with post-tax basis. Every year I have to do this on my own and figure out how to put the final numbers on the right form in Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Love Turbo Tax
What's not so great: Form 8606

What's not so great: SOME QUESTIONS WERE A BIT CONFUSING THE FIRST TIME BUT WILL BE A PIECE OF CAKE NEXT YEAR.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Have used TT for over 10 years. It is so easy and quick to prepare taxes and get them filed. Less than a day for both federal and state taxes. the one weakness of TT is it does nothing to help reduce the tax bite.
What's great about it: preparing and filing is easy
What's not so great: no help with reducing taxes
