Not for bond investors or estimate planners.

Bond Investors: EasyStep as it relates to Schedule B adjustments to bond interest income needs to be changed to make it easy to input AND CODE more than one kind of adjustment, including those adjustments that do appear and those that do not appear in a 1099-INT box. Examples are, amortizable bond premiums and accrued bond interest paid when you bought bonds (provided as "Supplemental Information" not reported to the IRS). You have to add them together to get both of them on Sch B but you can code only one of them (A or B), the program will not accept two codes (A and B) and so the lump sum sits there waiting for the IRS to ask for the breakdown. The problem is carried over to the state return. Estimate Planning: You can reduce or eliminate pesky quarterly estimates by taking 100% of your MRD from your retirement accounts and having all of it withheld before you file your returns. But for retired people TurboTax makes adjusting your quarterlies to reflect this practically impossible because EasyStep requires you to go through the ridiculous fiction of adjusting paycheck withholding on a W-9 to get to the desired result. Site Map: To assist users in going back and forth between the often opaque EasyStep and the forms, TurboTax should develop a sort of site map that illustrates the linkages among forms and among forms and worksheets. If you insert a number on one form or worksheet, you need to know how many times it's plugged in elsewhere and where in case you have to change it and want to make sure the change is completely carried out.

Always glad Turbo Tax exists

For the most part, I can't say enough good things about Turbo Tax, but I do have one complaint. At the beginning when it asks about transferring the return - it is confusing that it looks like it is searching & I wasn't sure if I should click on "Transfer your Return" or not. I finally did because it was taking forever - it just kept going round & round searching.
What's great about it: Walks you through everything - asks lots of questions - figures everything out for you
What's not so great: Some questions are little confusing

Every year I owe money, but this year I'm getting a State refund! It's due to the fact that I turned 62 last year and qualified for a retirement exclusion. I had no idea! I am grateful that Turbo Tax knows all the ins and outs and knows the proper deductions.
What's great about it: So simple!
What's not so great: None!

We have been using Turbo Tax for some 20+ years and this was the worst. Some forms were not filled out, others needed to be corrected by myself and the past years were not complete. You are getting to slow on getting your software updated.
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: Very hard to work with. Downloads used my date in excess.

Tax prep review

It is sometimes hard to go back to a section that was skipped over. Fortunately, the search feature helps, but not always. At the end, the system would not send my return, even after the system said that the return was ready to file and after I paid the Turbo Tax fee. To get the return to go, several edits had to be made, which I questioned were correct. It is a toss up as to whether I would use this software again because of that.
What's great about it: Most of the software is very easy to use.
What's not so great: There are a few bugs in the system.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I have been using TurboTax to prepare our tax returns since it was in DOS format on floppy disks......have used it every year with two exceptions.... 1) The year we bought an existing business: We paid a CPA firm to set it up - Result: An audit which left me owing the IRS because there was a significant error. The firm paid the penalty as it was their error. 2 The year we sold the business: Different CPA firm- Result: Another audit, again the firm paid the penalty but I resolved to never let anyone else prepare our taxes again. From the time our four daughters were required to file tax returns we walked them through the program and they all still use it to prepare their taxes today, considering the eldest recently turned 50 that's quite a record. There has never been an error found on any of our returns prepared using Turbo Tax, its very simple to follow the questions and prepare your taxes. It is also very simple to E-file both Federal and State returns. I cannot imagine why anyone would use any other program for tax preparation. I know I won't!!!!
What's great about it: simple questions in easy to understand language
What's not so great: none

2 PROBLEMS BUT OTHERWISE GREAT

1. We sold a rental property this year and it was not apparent how we should enter that information. Turned out to be on schedule E under the Depreciation button for each property BUT I am not accustomed to opening that section since it is usually only about depreciation which TT always calculates for me and I have no other input for. Please add a section for "sold rental property" This is so obscure that I wasted hours trying to figure out where to enter my sale of rental property. 2. My 1099 Div forms from Fidelity report "Exempt Interest Dividends' in Box 10 and Cash Liquidation Distributions" in Box 8. This is different from the Box 8 and 10 that your forms that they input to when you automatically tranfer the 1099 Div by way of internet. Please take a look at this.
What's great about it: Been using since day 1. Gets better each year!!
What's not so great: 2 problems which were confusing-see below
Pros: I bought or sold investments
