TT has problems with more complex returns
on March 30, 2016

I attempted to send this information in detail before and spent 15 min. composing the email in the "Tell us What You Think" link however when I attempted to send it an error message appeared saying the system was down and the email disappeared. So much for the voice of the consumer.
First some background. I've used TT for over 20 years so I am familiar with the process although not enthralled with it. In addition, I have done returns in the VITA program for 6 years and usually prepare around 100 returns per tax year using the TaxWise which I think is a vastly superior program mainly because it allows direct entry into forms as opposed to the interview process which can be cumbersome and time consuming. However, in its' defense, TT is not written for individuals with prior experience in tax preparation so it needs to take that consideration into account.
So where did TT screw up? Advising users to enter only broker transaction totals from 1099-B and mail in a copy is a bad idea. I tried it and it inflated my capital gains by several thousand dollars because it makes no distinction between true capital gains and bond discounts, even with entering the proper codes and adjustments. Instead of referring user to IRS.gov, where is the Form 8949 worksheet for column d & g adjustments? Isn't the point of purchasing tax software to alleviate having to read IRS manuals? How many unknowing taxpayers did as directed and fell into that booby trap?
As for K-1's, TT had trouble distinguishing expenses from income and was unable to link it to Form 1116 even when the columns and activities matched up. Speaking of Form 1116, when no current year tax was due (line 44, Form 1040)) TT suffered a nervous breakdown. I wasted several hours trying to determine why a C/F credit from 2014 was red and the error message said the entry should not have a value. If so, they why is it there? Other error messages were gibberish, offering absolutely no clarification on what or how to correct the mistake TT generated and like the K-1 it kept confusing tax credits with income. Finally I had to enter manual calculations in override to get the 1116 completed, something TT really dislikes but then again I mail my return.
Having done taxes by hand since the 80's gives one a leg up on faulty software. Quality control needs a serious overhaul or people will go elsewhere.
What's great about it: Good for simple returns
What's not so great: Some serious software glitches

Overcame a nasty bug in the program

Doing both the federal and state tax returns with TurboTax is a breeze. The sequence of steps is well thought out and very clear. I did have a nasty problem in which the state taxes would not efile, and I suspect it had something to do with the Mac version I was using. I spent two long sessions with your tech support and the person that helped me was great. TurboTax was finding an error on a form that I was not required to file. We deleted the form and the error was bypassed so that I could efile.. I'm sure this was a bug in the Mac version that only showed up because I was filing as a part-year resident of New York.
What's great about it: Generating the returns was thorough and straightforward and logical
What's not so great: I needed two sessions with your support people in order to get the state return to efile.
Pros: I moved

TurboTax for 2015

This is the 2nd year I am using TurboTax and I'm very pleased. I switched to this because of my brokerage info and the fact that using the Premier edition, I can automatically download the info from my brokerage. I'm also very happy I can E-file my federal return for free!
What's great about it: Easy to navigate and use. I can download my brokerage info with a click!
What's not so great: It takes a little practice to find the best way to ask a question when looking for more info.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Would be a 5 except for requirement to purchase more expensive version, even if you have one stock sale. I have been a user for a number of years, but it still takes me time to go thru all the steps. I also try to itemize but I never get enough deductions to exceed the standard deduction but I keep trying.
What's great about it: Easy to use.
What's not so great: Does not automatically save. Lost my entire input. Had to re input.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TT does not do a good job of handling income (as little as a few days worth) earned in a state[s] other than the state of residence.
What's great about it: Easy to use and very thorough
What's not so great: income earned in multiple states is a problem
