Simplest ever

I am a DIY person who has always done his own taxes (50 yrs). At first, I did them by hand. Then I used a spread sheet. Have used TurboTax for about 17 years. I use the Premier version because of my investments. For many years I had a limited partnership that sent me a K-1 Form. That was confusing and a pain because I had to enter some data as a business and other as real estate. I don't know if TurboTax has fixed that problem because they converted to a REIT.
TurboTax has gotten easier most years, and this was the easiest yet. I didn't have to flag even one item that I had questions about and there were no errors discovered. As noted in the Pros, all my dividends, capital gains and sales of mutual funds were transferred accurately and posted to the correct forms and line items. It is an easy way to save on tax preparation.
What's great about it: All mutual fund data downloaded accurately
What's not so great: None

TURBO TAX COVERS THE BASES

I'VE USED TURBO TAX FOR YEARS AND I'VE LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THIS VERY EXCELLENT APPROACH TO DOING MY TAXES. THE IRS TAX CODES ARE EXCEPTIONALLY COMPLEX, BUT INTUIT HAS DONE A MASTERFUL JOB OF GUIDING ITS USERS THROUGH THE MAZE OF FILING THEIR TAXES.
THAT BEING SAID, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE USER CAREFULLY ENTER HIS DATA CORRECTLY AND AT THE PROPER PLACE. I'VE INCORRECTLY ENTERED INFORMATION IN THE PAST AND HAD A HECK OF A TIME FERRETING OUT AND CORRECTING MY MISTAKE.
HATS OFF TO INTUIT FOR KEEPING TURBO TAX AVAILABLE AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE, AND FOR THEIR HELP IN SORTING THINGS OUT WHEN WE USERS GO THE WRONG WAY ON A ONE-WAY STREET.
What's great about it: EVERY TAX DETAIL IS CONTAINED SOMEWHERE IN TURBO TAX
What's not so great: SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LOOK CAREFULLY FOR YOUR TAX SOLUTIONS OR YOU COULD ENTER YOUR INFO IN INCORRECT PLACES

What's great about it: Easy and accurate accounting

I have used TTax for over 20 years and have been generally satisfied until this year. On the good side, data transferred easily, loading the program went smoothly and the help
box was generally helpful. On the downside, the program often
got stuck and could not move past the "calculating" message.
I had to exit TTax to unblock the program. Also, on four-five occasions I found that the program opened forms or entered data in error. I was able to find the errors by entering the forms and making corrections. This was time consuming and was a source of concern.

Taxes

TurboTax is essential. However, one question related to education expenses and deductions related to Coverdall were not explained well. Changing the entry, which was optional, led to a big difference in the amount returned.
What's great about it: Impossible without TurboTax

Generally works well, helpful that it loads the previous tax years documents. But when it comes back and asks for the info it already has, it's not clear if a mistake was made or if something has changed.
What's great about it: mostly easy
What's not so great: sometimes confusing, not enough context

CSR Christina answered by question about the TT amount of taxes owed vs PUB 17 very quickly and without hesitation. She even set me a link to the explanation from PUB 17.
What's great about it: Quick accurate answer!
What's not so great: Waiting time,but it is a holiday

Federal payment with Iowa refund!

Although I had to quit the app as it was taking so long to calculate Iowa, once I restarted the app it took no time to go over the state return. I love the audit risk feature too.
What's great about it: I love the ability to import W2, It's deductible, 1099, etc.
What's not so great: 2015 had some issues with Iowa calculation
