Unaccustomed glitches

I have used this family of programs since MacInTax days in the early 1990s. This year I had several hangups when the program hung and required me to Force Quit. Additionally, it persisted in ignoring my evaluations of donations, which I have very carefully documented from reliable sources. I had to go in to the donations section and re-enter information already submitted. At one point, when I Fixing Errors, I clicked over to the Form, corrected the error, and tried to roll back to Easy Step. Major hangup (rolling beach ball) for quite some time. My two decades of positive experiences stand in STARK CONTRAST to this year's situation.
What's great about it: Ability to navigate tax return with relative ease
What's not so great: Unexpected and unaccustomed hangups and glitches

Easy Taxes

I've been using Turbo Tax since 2006. It's fast and easy to file. I especially like that it's able to pull up your previous years filing so you can compare. The first time we used Turbo Tax, it took a while to enter all of our information correctly. And because our tax information doesn't change very drastically, and the previous years date is on file, entering the information is a breeze. I also like the fact that you're able to automatically download W2 Form information and financial information. Also, I like that the Fed return information is automatically transferred to your State return - makes filing State return just as easy.
What's great about it: Preparing your own tax returns doesn't get any simpler. Just let the program guide you through.
What's not so great: Having to enter new information.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Several Hang Ups this year

Program frequently went into calculating mode where the only way to stop the spinning calculating icon would be to shut down the program. This would happen when entering something as benign as an e-mail address. Shutting down the program and restarting would find the entered data as intended. I would guess that it was necessary to shut down and restart the program 10 times or more to be able to complete a single return. The shut downs and restarts did not appear to affect the data entered so it was just a matter of aggravation and not mathematical errors.
What's great about it: Overall the program worked as intended
What's not so great: Program would frequently go into calculating mode that was unstoppable without backing out of program.

Necessary Evil

Turbo Tax does a good job cover my complex return. I'm in the military and have rentals so there is a lot to cover. Importing the previous years information helps, but it still asks about carryovers when it should know if you had any. Once you answer yes, it does figure them in. Overall I am happy with Turbo Tax, otherwise I wouldn't have continued to use it for the last 17 years!

pretty grounded software

You can do almost any return using this software. I had to pick up the deluxe version as I needed the gains / losses section. The examples provided and the words describing what is needed is easy to understand. Although sometimes it would be nice for extra examples. And you really start getting the benefits if you get it year after year; they can start with last year's data and you only have to handle what's new/changed. And they walk you through the return step by step so nothing is forgotten.
Be sure to always get the software upgrades before starting - and if you stop partway through your return...check for upgrades when you come back! You want to make sure you have the most current product when you file.
It sure feels like they want lots of info to efile - but it is quick, and efficient.
