Complex Return For Me
on March 26, 2016
Posted by: NewHampshire16
I live in New Hampshire, work in Massachusetts and own a property in California. Also did my kids returns and filed for a trust. Handled everything perfectly.
What's great about it: Walked me through everything
What's not so great: Happy with product

Easy as pie!

Since about 80% of my income is from my employer, and the other 20% is from miscellaneous 1099s, it is difficult each year to determine which expenses should be attributed to each. As a performing artist, my supplies, sheet music, repairs, union dues are all used for the same instruments that I play for both jobs. At what level do I stop putting them under 1099s and add them to the W2 expenses. (Schedule C vs 2106).
that is always the most confusing for me.
Otherwise, the rental income part and expenses was spot on and quite easy to do. One thing might help. When do you have to depreciate repairs or replacements and when can you take the whole thing as a one year expense, ie, new roofs, appliances, tiling of floors, etc.
What's great about it: It asked me exactly the questions I needed to expedite my return.
What's not so great: Figuring out which work expenses go with W2s and which ones with 1099s for the greatest tax advantage.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

You messed up!

I filled out the information from my W2 correctly, but the amount I paid to state taxes did not automatically fall into the state taxes tab. Therefore, it initially looked like I had to pay 3000. After starting over with my W2 from scratch, it then worked and I got a return of 500. This error happened to my parents as well. Fix this!
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: W2 wrong

Very Good

Good software. Beats the living daylights out of trying to work it out oneself with the forms and a pencil. Could be perfect for me if it would
a) Figure out K1 data based on what I can enter directly from my K1 forms, instead of having to independently research, say, the nature of the partnership.
b) On State returns, pull in *all* the relevant information from the Federal, and do all the math, i.e. don't make me look up the entry and figure out that 150-150 = 0.
What's great about it: Covered almost all Federal stuff - a bit weak on K1s
What's not so great: State data has to be entered manually when it should be derivable from Federal, or obvious (e.g.10-10=0)

disappointed
on March 26, 2016

I have used TurboTax for 15 years. This year I was very disappointed in the program. It seemed to have all kinds of bugs in how returns were saved and how they opened. In the past the questionnaire gave me confidence that I was correctly completing my return. This year, I do not feel positive at all.
What's not so great: generally disappointed in the flow, instructions, and ability to open and review

Overall, I really like Turbo Tax. Have used for many years.
What's great about it: very good at walking through tax returns
What's not so great: If you do not e-file State Returns, it does not walk you through printing and filing them.
