2015 Taxes
on March 22, 2016

Turbo-Tax works well, good user interface. They should warn you on the first e-file or mail page and not so much later when it is more difficult to back up and resetting the state e-file option.
What's great about it: Easy to use interface
What's not so great: Cost of e-filing the state form.

Great program to complete fairly complex return
on March 22, 2016

I was very pleased with the software. My taxes are fairly complex, so I used the Premium edition. Things were easy to answer and the help facility truly was helpful. There were a few entries, such as the amount of dividends expressed in foreign currency, that I had to enter after shifting to the forms mode, but nearly all of my work was done in the step-by-step mode.
What's great about it: The step-by-step method with me given a choice to work on what I wanted
What's not so great: Some information for a foreign dividend had to be hand entered
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TurboTax Premier
on March 22, 2016

For Rental Property. I had been renting my other house for some time now. However, being a first time user for this program it would not let me report the house for those number of years. Instead, it reports the rental and a new house first time purchase.
Also Employee Rideshare, I noticed that when it is checked and I return to this screen to review that section I noticed that the Prior to 1987 Rideshare block is also checked.
Overall review...
This program is fantastic! I have been using H&R BLOCK Tax Software, but now I will be using only this program. Very detailed and the saving from my returns increased!
What's great about it: Fantastic!
What's not so great: See first paragraph in Review.

Not bad. I don't know of a better tax-prep tool

The 2015 tax-year Premier version of Turbotax for windows is a fairly decent tool - high praise from someone like me.
My only big complaint is that in retrospect I would have expected the tool to guide and caution me better for the 1099-B filing. The 1099-B is a fiasco this year, and if you don't input cost-basis information that contradicts the 1099-B information, you will end up paying a lot more tax - you'll be taxed twice on the cost-basis amount.
Given the seriousness of this situation, I would have expected the Software to do a better job of cautioning and guiding me. I only caught the issue accidentally after noticing a printout from my broker's website that I'd saved half a year ago, that showed the cost basis for my stock sale. The 1099-B shows a ZERO cost-basis for the same sales, apparently as per IRS requirements. So Turbotax muffed this one. Hopefully they will do better in the future.
Over the prior two years I've seen features disappear from the Deluxe version and the version below that too. So now I pay the extra for the Premier version and no major issues any longer. Intuit mishandled the features on cheaper versions in the past two years. But now I can only comment on the Premier version this year, and it is a good product.
What's great about it: Lots of good tips and help. Phone help if needed.
What's not so great: 1099-B help is inadequate. Feature evaporation in recent years for the "Deluxe" version,

review locked my imac up twice!
on March 22, 2016
Posted by: ric936
I've used turbo tax over 10 years and like it in that it is very thorough. This year is the third year I have done it on my Apple imac. It locked up when "calculating' twice and would not let me go forward or back and I ended up starting over. The third time it did not lock up. Just frustrating to have to start over....
What's great about it: Asks all the right questions. When finished you feel like there are no mistakes.
What's not so great: Not very stable, at least with imac operating system. Two times near the end of review program went brain dead.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

How to effectively use TTax
on March 22, 2016

An accurate way to prepare complex taxes, including small business features.
Although not in the TTax "design" I find that it is also very helpful as a 12-month planner for preparing the subsequent year's "Estimated" taxes (admittedly with outdated info), and organizing deductions continuously thoughout the year.
Very handy in exploring a wide range of "what if" situations.
Earlier inclusion of state forms has been a nice plus.
Been a TTax user for over 20 years, and will be disappointed when Windows XP support is dropped.
What's great about it: Flexibility in planning and answering "what if" questions
What's not so great: State filing not included, dropping support for Windows XP
