Great Tax Prep Software Getting Better Each Year
on March 22, 2016
Posted by: FredWayland
I have been using TurboTax for more than 10 years and find that it has been getting better each year. The user interface is well designed and makes it relatively easy to enter information for even complex tax situations including buying and selling a house, renting, and buying and selling investments. The explanations are well written and easy to understand and the software guides you through the complete return.
The program reads in tax information from prior years. This makes in unnecessary to re enter identification information and supports useful across-year comparisons.
ItsDeductible is provided to assist computing value for non-cash charitable donations, My only problem with ItsDeductible and TurboTax (which uses the same input for charitable contributions) is that if you have many charitable contributions (more than 30) it is time consuming to enter the information for each charity because this involves multiple button pushes, scrolling, and selections. It might be better to provide a spread-sheet input on one page and to make it possible to order the charities by amount given and/or their name.
What's great about it: Guides you through even complex situations making tax preparation easy
What's not so great: It is time consuming to enter many charitable donations with the current interface
Pros: I bought or sold investments

TurboTax is so logical and easy to use I would never do taxes any other way. I have rental properties and TurboTax walks me thru everything necessary.
What's great about it: Best program ever, of any type
What's not so great: Some "corrections" confusing

All Family Members' Tax Expert
on March 22, 2016
Posted by: NancyLeedoestax
Here are some changes I would like to see: (1) I often return to data I enter in the rentals section, but in so doing, Turbo Tax takes me every time through one-time preliminary data. Please add a button which allows one to immediately move to the financial data, bypassing the preliminary data after its initial entry. (2) I do individual income taxes for 5 family members. This year I found no way to name the first income tax, so I always have to remember whatever Turbo Tax calls it. (3) Illinois forms do not show on the "Forms" list. (4) If one does not e-file, there's no way to provide feedback such as I'm doing right now. Fix this! (5) When transferring between computers, I can tell that my personal information from last year has been populated to this year's TurboTax form, but important carryover data from Schedules D and E seems not to have been populated.
What's great about it: Clear and Easy to Follow
What's not so great: See Review Below Population of only a portion of previous year's data to a new computer is a problem.
